Global coronavirus death toll tops 7,000

PARIS, March 17 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The number of deaths around the world linked to the new coronavirus has topped 7,000, after Italy announced a new surge in fatalities

A total of 7,007 people have died, with a 175,536 infections recorded globally.

China has the highest number of fatalities at 3,213, followed by Italy with 2,158 deaths and almost 28,000 cases.

Since 1700 GMT on Sunday there were 587 new deaths reported and 11,597 new cases globally.

France deploys 100,000 security forces for coronavirus

PARIS, March 17 (NNN-AGENCIES) — France deployed 100,000 police and gendarmerie forces Tuesday to control people’s movements because of the coronavirus outbreak, according to the country’s interior minister.

Christophe Castaner said those who do not respect the new rules, would be fined up to 135 euros ($151).

President Emmanuel Macron announced Monday that movement would be limited for 15 days, starting midday Tuesday.

As of late Monday, France reported 6,633 infections and 148 dead, an increase of 21 deaths and 1,210 new cases from the virus known as COVID-19.

Malaysia under restricted movement order to counter Covid-19 spread

KUALA LUMPUR, March 16 (NNN-BERNAMA) — Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin today announced that Malaysia will be placed under a nationwide restricted movement order from March 18 to March 31 to keep in control the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

The order, the first in the country’s history, was announced by the prime minister in a broadcast this evening brought live to the people from the national television.

Al-Aqsa's enclosed prayer places closed due to Corona

16 Mar 2020; MEMO: Enclosed prayer places at Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque have been shut in an effort to stem the spread of coronavirus, the authority responsible for overseeing the city’s Islamic and Christian holy sites announced on Sunday, Anadolu Agency reports.

“The Islamic Waqf Department decided to close the enclosed prayer places as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of coronavirus,” Sheikh Omar al-Kiswani, the director of Al-Aqsa Mosque, said in a statement.

India: SC takes suo moto cognisance of overcrowding of prisons in the wake of Corona

New Delhi, Mar 16 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Monday took suo moto cognisance of overcrowding and infrastructure of prisons across the country in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

A bench of Chief Justice S A Bobde and L N Rao issued a notice to the Director General, Prison, and chief secretary of all states and union territories seeking their response by March 20 on steps taken for prevention of COVID-19.

The court also asked all states and union territories to depute an officer on March 23 who could assist the court in the matter.

New York closes public schools, limits services at restaurants

New York, Mar 16 (PTI) New York officials have announced the closure of city's public schools, the largest public school system in the nation, beginning Monday till at least April 20 and ordered all restaurants to limit to food takeaway only, as the city responded with "wartime mentality" to combat the fast-spreading deadly coronavirus.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio on Sunday announced that he has made the "painful decision" to suspend classes in all NYC public schools, beginning March 16. There are now 329 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in New York City and 5 fatalities.

China reports 14 new coronavirus deaths; imported cases rise to 123

Beijing, Mar 16 (PTI) The coronavirus death toll in China rose to 3,213 with 14 new fatalities, while the imported cases climbed to 123 after 12 new infections were reported, prompting Beijing to make 14-day quarantine in special facilities compulsory for foreigners returning to the country.

As of Sunday, 14 new deaths were reported, taking the death toll due to the deadly virus to 3,213, China's National Health Commission (NHC) said on Monday.

India: BJP to launch awareness campaign against coronavirus in J-K

Jammu, Mar 15 (PTI) Jammu and Kashmir BJP president Ravinder Raina on Sunday announced a month-long 'Jana Jagaran Abhiyaan' (public awareness campaign) against coronavirus in the Union Territory from March 20.

"The sensitization programme against the coronavirus will be kick started at the district level on March 20 and will be taken to the block level," Raina said chairing a meeting of office-bearers of the party here.

India: No floor test in MP, House adjourned over coronavirus concern

Bhopal, Mar 16 (PTI) In a reprieve for beleaguered Kamal Nath-led government, the Madhya Pradesh Assembly was adjourned till March 26 in view of the state government's concern over coronavirus even as the BJP raised the demand for holding of a floor test as directed by Governor Lalji Tandon.

After the Budget session began at 11 am after singing of Vande Mataram, the governor began his customary address to the House which lasted for barely two minutes, as he didn't read out the entire content and left with Speaker NP Prajapati.

Qatar Reports 64 New Cases Of COVID-19

DOHA, Mar 16 (NNN-QNA) – A total of 64 new cases of COVID-19 were registered in Qatar on Sunday, the Qatari health ministry said.

“The new confirmed cases thus raise the total number of infections to 401 all over the country,” the ministry was quoted as saying.

The infected cases are being quarantined, receiving full medical care and in a very good health.

THE Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, announced earlier on Sunday, additional measures to control the COVID-19 outbreak.
