COVID-19: Global Infections Exceed 90,000 As Countries Scramble To Contain Spread

CHINA, Mar 5 (NNN-AGENCIES) – COVID-19 continued its spread across the globe, despite travel restrictions aimed at curtailing its spread.

As the global death toll reached over 3,000, South Korea said, it has confirmed 599 new cases, far higher than the daily tally reported in China. With 4,335 confirmed infections and at least 28 deaths, South Korea has the second-largest national caseload. However, it has tested more than 100,000 people, far more than most nations.

17 Indians abroad infected with coronavirus

New Delhi, Mar 4 (PTI) Seventeen Indians have been infected with coronavirus abroad, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Wednesday.

Responding to a question in Lok Sabha, Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan said 16 cases were reported from Japan on the cruise ship and one from the UAE.

World Bank announces US$12 bln to assist countries impacted by Covid-19

KUALA LUMPUR, March 4 (NNN-BERNAMA) — The World Bank Group is making available an initial package of up to US$12 billion in immediate support to assist countries coping with the health and economic impacts of COVID-19.

In a statement today, it said the financing is designed to help member countries take effective action to respond to and where possible, lessen the tragic impacts posed by the global outbreak.

Italy’s confirmed coronavirus cases rises to 2,263, 79 deaths

ROME, March 4 (NNN-Xinhua) — Italian authorities on Tuesday confirmed 2,263 coronavirus cases, which marked an increase of 428 infections compared to the previous day.

The figure did not include recoveries or fatalities, whose numbers were provided separately.

“We have 160 people today who have recovered, which marks an increase by 11 cases compared to Monday,” Civil Protection Department chief and extraordinary commissioner for the coronavirus emergency Angelo Borrelli told a televised press conference.

COVID-19 Cases In India Rise To 28

NEW DELHI, Mar 4 (NNN-PTI) – The number of COVID-19 cases in India has risen to 28, after 15 Italian tourists tested positive today (Wednesday), said media reports.

An emergency meeting is going on in the country’s Health Ministry, to take stock of the situation.

The country’s Health Minister, Harsh Vardhan, is scheduled to brief the media, after the meeting concludes.

Germany reports 31 new coronavirus infections as Ukraine confirms 1st case

BERLIN, March 4 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Germany rose to 188 on Tuesday, up from 157 on Monday afternoon, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) said.

Thirteen of Germany’s 16 federal states have now reported cases of the novel coronavirus, with the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia being most affected, according to the RKI.

Germany has not reported a fatal case of the virus, which emerged in the Chinese metropolis Wuhan late last year and is quickly spreading around the world,

Coronavirus death toll climbs to 2,943 in China, infected cases witness surge globally

Beijing, Mar 3 (PTI) The coronavirus death toll in China climbed to 2,943 with 31 more deaths, while 125 confirmed cases were reported, the lowest since the virus outbreak in the country, Chinese health officials said on Tuesday even as the deadly disease wrecked havoc globally with the total number of deaths crossing 3,000 and infections surging past 89,000.

China's National Health Commission, (NHC) said on Tuesday it received reports of 125 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 31 deaths on Monday in the country.

Six coronavirus deaths in US, 91 confirmed cases: Pence

Washington, Mar 3 (PTI) The number of deaths in the US from the deadly coronavirus rose to six on Monday while the total number of confirmed cases in the country crossed 90, Vice President Mike Pence has said, as the novel virus continues to spread around the world despite travel restrictions.

All the six deaths in the US are from the Washington state with 43 domestic cases and 48 cases of the individuals who returned to the US, officials said on Monday.

COVID-19: UK PM Johnson chairs emergency meeting as cases rise to 40

LONDON, March 3 (NNN-Xinhua) — British Prime Minister Boris Johnson chaired a Monday meeting of the government’s COBRA emergency committee amid rising threat of the novel coronavirus as Britain confirmed four new COVID-19 cases on the same day, bringing its total number of infections to 40.

During the meeting, a four-stage “battle plan” was agreed by ministers, which lays out in detail the measures that could be used if and when they are needed.
