India: 956 minor rape cases registered in 9 months in Odisha state

Bhubaneswar, Nov 18 (PTI) Odisha has registered 1,865 rape cases including sexual assault on 956 minor girls, 7,706 molestation incidents and 337 dowry death cases during the first nine months of 2019, the assembly was informed on Monday.

The state government, however, said the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data putting Odisha at the top of molestation and fourth in dowry death cases in the country are not correct.

India: JNU students' protest over fee hike brings city to halt

New Delhi, Nov 18 (PTI) Students of JNU clashed with police on Monday after they were stopped from marching to Parliament against a hostel fee hike, paralysing traffic and bringing the city to a halt.

The students also clashed with the police outside Safdurjung tomb near Jor Bagh. While the students alleged that they were batoncharged by police, top police officials denied having used any force.

India: Karnataka by-polls: 248 candidates file nominations for 15 seats

Bengaluru, Nov 19 (PTI) A total of 248 candidates including those belonging to the Congress, JD(S) and ruling BJP have filed their nominations for December 5 bypolls to 15 assembly constituencies in Karnataka, the scrutiny of which would take place on Tuesday, poll officials said.

A total of 353 nominations have been filed by the candidates, they said.

Indian fishermen attacked, chased away by Sri Lankan Navy

Rameswaram(TN), Nov 19 (PTI) More than 2,000 Tamil Nadu fishermen were allegedly chased away by the Sri Lankan Navy while they were fishing near Katchatheevu islet, a fishermen association leader said here on Tuesday.

The fishermen from this island town had ventured into the sea on Monday evening in 540 boats and were fishing off Katchatheevu when a team of Sri Lankan naval personnel came to the spot and attacked before driving them away, Rameswaram Fishermen Association President P Sesuraja alleged.

Taliban commanders part of swap for Western hostages arrive in Qatar: sources

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Reuters) - Three Taliban commanders who are part of a prisoner swap for two Western hostages held by the militant group have landed in Qatar, three Taliban sources familiar with the deal said on Tuesday.

The Afghan government’s decision to carry out the swap is seen as key to securing direct talks with the Islamist militants, who have, until now, refused to engage with what they call an illegitimate “puppet” regime in Kabul.

Kashmir shutdown caused losses of more than $1 billion, trade body says

SRINAGAR (Reuters) - Economic losses in Kashmir have run well over a billion dollars since India revoked its autonomy and statehood in August, the main trade body in the Himalayan region said, adding that it planned to sue the government for damages.

India turned its erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir into a federally-controlled territory, tightening control in a shock move it said would rein in militancy in the region also claimed by neighboring Pakistan, and promote its development.

Chinese Medical Team Provide Free Eye Surgeries To Nepali Patients

KATHMANDU, Nov 18 (NNN-NEPALNEWS) – Chinese medical team, provided free cataract surgeries, to over 50 Nepali patients, in the last two days here, as part of programmes to strengthen medical cooperation between the two countries.

The medical team, under China’s Shenzhen Chaoqing Charity, conducted the surgeries, the fifth of its kind, at the Manmohan Memorial Hospital on Saturday and Sunday, and members of the federal parliament and other Nepali officials joined the Chinese Ambassador to Nepal, Hou Yanqi, to visit the patients at the ward on Sunday evening (last night).

Inhuman lockdown enters 106th straight day in IOK

ISLAMABAD, Nov 18 (APP): In Indian occupied Kashmir, the inhuman lockdown imposed by India in the Kashmir valley and parts of Jammu region entered 106th straight day on Monday (Today).

According to Kashmir Media Service , though some restrictions have been eased in most parts of the territory yet the situation is still far from normal especially in the Kashmir Valley and Muslim majority areas of Jammu and Ladakh regions where people are seething with anger over New Delhi’s anti-Kashmir moves.

India: Aamir Khan posts first look from 'Laal Singh Chaddha'

Mumbai, Nov 18 (PTI) Superstar Aamir Khan on Monday shared his first look from the much-awaited film "Laal Singh Chaddha".

An official remake of Tom Hanks' 1994 feature "Forrest Gump", the film is being directed by Advait Chandan. Kareena Kapoor Khan is playing the female lead.

Aamir took to social media to post the first look poster from the film that introduces him as the titular character.
