India: Mentally ill woman abducted from road, gang raped

Kolkata, Nov 13 (PTI) An inmate of a home for mentally ill women in the city was abducted from road and gang raped after she went out at night breaking a lock, the police said on Wednesday.

A group of men got the 38-year-old woman in a car by force from a road near the home at Panchasayar in south- eastern fringes of the city and raped in the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday.

India: UP provident fund scam much bigger: Priyanka

New Delhi, Nov 13 (PTI) The provident fund scam in Uttar Pradesh is "much bigger" as money of SIDCO employees has also been invested in DHFL after those of the state's power department, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra alleged on Wednesday.

Over Rs 2,600 crore of the state power employees' provident fund was reportedly invested in the scam-hit Dewan Housing Finance Corporation Limited, prompting the state government to order a CBI probe.

India: Smog shrouds Delhi-NCR again; schools shut till Friday

New Delhi, Nov 13 (PTI) The noxious smog resulting from raging farm fires and unfavourable weather pushed pollution in Delhi-NCR towards the "emergency" zone on Wednesday, prompting authorities to order closure of schools till November 15 -- a second time in two weeks.

With the Central Pollution Control Board fearing a similar situation will prevail over the next two days, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said the odd-even road rationing scheme can be extended if needed.

India: Man gets 20 years in prison for raping woman

Aizawl, Nov 14 (PTI) A court in Mizoram's Lunglei district has sentenced a man to 20 years imprisonment for raping a married woman.

District and Sessions Judge Joel Joseph Denga on Monday convicted J Lalruatsanga of Rulkual village for raping the woman and ordered him to undergo 20 years imprisonment. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 on the convict.

India: Dalit (untouchable) youth strangulated to death in Muzaffarnagar

Muzaffarnagar, Nov 14 (PTI) A Dalit youth was strangulated to death at Kamalpur village in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district, police said on Thursday.

The body of the youth, identified as Pankaj Kumar alias Guddu, was found near a tubewell in Kamalpur village under Shahpur police station, Circle Officer Vijay Pratap Singh said, adding that the victim was missing since Wednesday night. The victim was strangulated to death, he said.

Two people have been taken into custody for interrogation, Singh said, adding that the body has been sent for post mortem examination.

India: SC dismisses pleas seeking review of Rafale judgment

New Delhi, Nov 14 (PTI) The Supreme Court Thursday gave clean chit to the Modi government on the purchase of 36 fully loaded Rafale fighter jets from French company Dassault Aviation, rejecting the plea for registration of an FIR by the CBI for alleged commission of cognisable offence in the deal.

The apex court dismissed the pleas seeking review of the December 14, 2018 verdict in which it had said that there was no occasion to doubt the decision-making process in the procurement of 36 Rafale fighter jets.

India: 'RBI to cut rates by 40 bps by Feb despite high inflation'

Mumbai, Nov 14 (PTI) Headline inflation is bound to rise further to 5 per cent for November, but despite the pinch in price rise, the Reserve Bank will go for two consecutive rate cuts on growth concerns, a report said on Thursday.

The consumer price inflation fastened to 4.62 per cent for October in official data released on Wednesday, resulting in concerns over RBI's rate stance, given that the central bank is mandated to keep the number at 4 per cent.

India: Naxal terrorist killed in encounter with security forces in C'garh

Raipur, Nov 13 (PTI) A Naxal, carrying a reward of Rs 1 lakh on his head, was killed in an encounter with security forces in Sukma district of Chhattisgarh on Wednesday, police said.

The skirmish took place at around 3 pm in the forest of Gachanpalli village under Bhejji police station area when a joint team of security forces was on a counter-insurgency operation, Inspector General of Police (Bastar range) Sundarraj P told PTI.

India: Retail inflation jumps to 4.62 pc in Oct

New Delhi, Nov 13 (PTI) Retail inflation surged to 4.62 per cent in October, mainly on account of higher food prices, according to government data released on Wednesday.

The inflation based on Consumer Price Index (CPI) was 3.99 per cent in September and 3.38 per cent in October 2018.

The inflation in the food basket spiked to 7.89 per cent in October 2019 as against 5.11 per cent the preceding month.
