India: No clarity on release of political leaders in J-K

New Delhi, Aug 22 (PTI) Jammu and Kashmir's political leaders, including former chief ministers Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti, are likely to be in custody for some more time with no clarity on their release as the Valley continues to be on edge.

A senior government official also made it clear that any decision on the release of the people under detention in Jammu and Kashmir will be taken by the local administration depending on the ground situation.

India: Unhappy over second girl child, woman kills husband in Maha

Palghar, Aug 22 (PTI) A 33-year-old woman from Nalasopara in Palghar district allegedly stabbed her husband to death as she was unhappy over the birth of their second girl child, police said on Thursday.

The incident took place at their residence in Gala Nagar early on Wednesday, police said.

The accused, Pranali Sunil Kadam, was arrested late Wednesday night for killing her 36-year-old husband, Palghar police spokesperson Hemant Katkar said.

India: AMU student arrested over Modi poster on Facebook

Aligarh (UP), Aug 22 (PTI) An Aligarh Muslim University student was arrested after his Facebook page showed an objectionable poster on Prime Minister Narendra Modi carried recently by anti-India protesters in London, police said.

Mohammad Zaid Rashid (20), admitted at the university's off-campus centre in Bihar's Kishanganj this year, was here when he downloaded a picture from the protests over the scrapping of the special status for Jammu and Kashmir.

India: Plea in SC challenging validity of amendments to UAPA

New Delhi, Aug 22 (PTI) A plea was filed in the Supreme Court on Thursday challenging the constitutional validity of the amendments to the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) on the ground that these infringed upon the fundamental rights of citizens.

The bill for amendments to the UAPA was passed by Parliament on August 2 and it received the President's ascent on August 9. The amended Act allows the Centre to designate individuals as terrorists and seize their properties.

India: Nagpur witnesses three killings in five hours

Nagpur, Aug 22 (PTI)Three separate cases of murder including a suspected contract killing were reported in Nagpur city in the space of five hours, police said on Thursday.

Nagpur, the second capital of Maharashtra, is the hometown of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also handles the home portfolio.

India: Azam Khan moves HC for quashing of 27 FIRs against him

Allahabad, Aug 22 (PTI) Senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan on Thursday moved the Allahabad High Court for quashing of a spate of FIRs registered against him in a single week in a Rampur police station for allegedly grabbing farmers' lands to build a university there.

As the matter came up for hearing, a bench of justices Pritinkar Diwakar and Justice Raj Beer Singh adjourned the hearing on the petition for August 29 on the request of Khan's counsel R K Jain.

India: Sun heat turns salty water sweet after vapourisation method

KANPUR:  A researcher has found a formula to clean the brine and fluoride-containing water. The simple method found by the Harcourt Butler research scholar was to prepare a wooden box with Galvanized Iron sheet, thermal and glass. 

Explaining his work he said that the wooden box glass covers the GI sheet coated with activated charcoal. The water is poured into the box and kept under the sun. The rays of the sun heat up the water and it turns into vapour then condensed into water after cooling. This vapourisation method makes the water drinkable.

India: Yogi keeps 37 dep including home and revenue; Suresh Khanna gets finance

Lucknow, Aug 22 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath late Thursday night allocated portfolios to ministers inducted into the cabinet, keeping 37 departments, including home and revenue, with him.

Deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya was given the charge of PWD, food processing, entertainment tax and public enterprises departments. Deputy CM Dinesh Sharma was allocated secondary and higher education, science and technology, electronics and IT departments, according to an official statement.

India: Former BJP MLA's son booked for killing wife in UP

Mathura, Aug 22 (PTI) Former BJP legislator Ajay Kumar Poeia's elder son has been booked for allegedly killing his wife, police said on Thursday.

The case against the former MLA's son has been registered at Kotwali police station in Mathura in Uttar Pradesh by his in-laws. Police said they will take action after conducting initial inquiry. Poeia had been an MLA from Govardhan (reserved) seat.

According to police, Poeia's daughter-in-law Seema was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her room on Tuesday evening, but the door was open from outside.

India: Denied loan by banks, UP farmer puts up kidney for sale

Saharanpur (UP), Aug 22 (PTI) A farmer in Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur district has put up posters seeking buyers for one of his kidneys after government banks allegedly turned down his requests for a loan.

Ramkumar (30), a resident of Chattar Sali village, claims to have completed a dairy farming course under the Centre's Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY).

However, he said no government bank gave him a loan despite him having shown them the PMKVY certificate.
