India: AP CM to go on pilgrimage to Jerusalem in August

Amaravati, Jul 29 (PTI) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy will undertake two trips abroad in August, one on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and the other on a personal visit to Dallas in the US.

These will be his maiden foreign tours after becoming Chief Minister on May 30.

While government orders related to his Jerusalem trip from August 1 to 4 have been issued, those related to the US visit are awaited.

India, Myanmar sign defence cooperation agreement

New Delhi, Jul 29 (PTI) India and Myanmar on Monday signed a defence co-operation agreement providing for boosting bilateral military engagement, weeks after the two countries carried out a coordinated operation targeting several militant groups operating in the Northeast.

The pact was inked after Commander-in-Chief of Myanmar's Defence Services Senior General Min Aung Hlaing held extensive talks with Minister of State for Defence Shripad Yesso Naik.

India: Law Minister moves Triple Talaq bill in RS

New Delhi, Jul 20 (PTI) Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Tuesday moved the triple talaq bill in Rajya Sabha, saying it has been brought to ensure justice for Muslim women and should not be seen through a political prism.

Urging members to approve 'The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019', he said the practice of triple talaq is continuing despite the Supreme Court banning the same through its judgement.

India: BSP leader shot dead in Alwar

Jaipur, Jul 29 (PTI) A Bahujan Samaj Party leader was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Rajasthan's Alwar district on Monday, police said.

Jasram Gurjar, 40, was the BSP candidate from Behror constituency in the 2018 state assembly elections.

The attackers fired at Gurjar near a temple in Jainpurbas village in Behror, Station House Officer (SHO) Sagun Singh said.

The SHO said Gurjar was rushed to a hospital where he died during treatment.

The body was sent for post-mortem, Singh said, adding that efforts were on to identify and nab the accused.

India: DCW chief meets Unnao rape survivor at Lucknow hospital

New Delhi, Jul 29; GANASHAKTI: Delhi Commission For Women chief Swati Maliwal on Monday met the Unnao rape survivor at a Lucknow hospital where she has been admitted after a road accident, and said she should be airlifted to Delhi for better treatment as she is "critical".

On Sunday, the woman, who has made rape allegation against BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, her two aunts and their advocate met with an accident while on their way to meet a kin who is lodged in Rae Bareli jail in a separate case, police said.

India: 293 big dams in country over 100 years old

New Delhi, Jul 29 (PTI) As many as 293 big dams in the country are more than 100 years old, Union minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said on Monday as he introduced a bill on dam safety in Lok Sabha.

The bill seeks to set up the National Dam Safety Authority for proper surveillance, inspection and maintenance of specified dams as well as address unresolved issues between states.

India: Death toll in Assam floods reaches 82

Guwahati, Jul 28 (PTI) The flood situation in Assam remained grim with the toll touching 82 on Sunday, following the death of one more person in Barpeta district.

A population of 21.68 lakh of 1,716 villages in 56 revenue circles of the state is affected by the deluge.

Besides Barpeta, the 17 other affected districts are Dhemaji, Sonitpur, Darrang, Baksa, Nalbari, Chirang, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, Goalpara, Kamrup, Kamrup (M), Morigaon, Nagaon, Golaghat, Jorhat and Cachar, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said.

India: 19 inmates at Ambala Central Jail tested HIV positive

Ambala (Har), Jul 28 (PTI) Nineteen inmates of the Ambala Central Jail were tested positive for HIV, officials said on Sunday.

They are now getting treatment at the Postgraduate Institute of Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh.

Jail Superintendent Lakhbir Singh Barar told reporters here that the National AIDS Control Society had launched a campaign for the detection of HIV, TB and cataract in the jail.

India: 2 Naxal terrorists killed in encounter in C'garh

Raipur, Jul 29 (PTI) Two Naxals, including a woman, were killed in an encounter with the security forces in the forests of Chhattisgarh's Sukma district on Monday, police said.

The firefight occurred around 7 am in the forest near Kanhaiguda village under Konta police station limits when a team of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) was out on a counter-insurgency operation, Deputy Inspector General (Anti-Naxal Operations) Sundarraj P told PTI.
