India: kolkata student raped at ‘gunpoint’ by tutor

10 July 2019; GANASHAKTI: Class X student of a school in a southern Calcutta pocket has alleged that she was repeatedly raped by a private tutor who would threaten to shoot her by showing a gun if she protested.

Police said they have recovered a few cartridges from the house of the accused — Rajib Chakraborty — but the gun was yet to be found.

The 48-year-old was arrested on Monday night based on a complaint lodged by the student in her teens.

India: Karnataka minister Shivakumar detained by Mumbai police

Mumbai, Jul 10 (PTI) Karnataka minister D K Shivakumar was taken into custody by Mumbai police outside the luxury hotel where rebel MLAs from his state are lodged.

Fomer Union minister Milind Deora and former Maharashtra minister Naseem Khan, who had arrived to meet Shivakumar, were also detained, an official said.

Shivakumar was almost pulled out by police while he was being interviewed by a TV channel.

The three leaders were taken to the BKC police guest house, the official said.

India: Rahul issued summonses by two Guj courts in defamation cases

Ahmedabad, Jul 9 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was issued summonses by two Gujarat courts on Tuesday in criminal defamation complaints filed by BJP leaders for allegedly calling Union Minister Amit Shah a "murder accused" and saying that "all thieves have Modi as surname".

Chief Judicial Magistrate B H Kapadia in Surat asked Gandhi to appear on July 16, while an Ahmedabad court ordered the Congress leader to appear on August 9.

India: Connaught Place 9th most expensive office location in the world

New Delhi, Jul 10 (PTI) New Delhi's Connaught Place (CP) is the ninth most expensive office location in the world with an annual rent of nearly USD 144 per sq ft, according to property consultant CBRE.

CP, located in the heart of the national capital, was at the ninth position even last year.

In its annual Global Prime Office Occupancy Costs survey, CBRE tracks the cost of leasing prime office space globally.

Pakistan: Ex PM's daughter summoned by anti-graft court in fake trust deed case

Islamabad, Jul 10 (PTI) Jailed former Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif's daughter Maryam Nawaz has been summoned by an anti-corruption court to appear before it on July 19 for allegedly submitting a fake trust deed in the high-profile Avenfield Apartments case.

The Avenfield properties case was one of three filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) last year in light of the Supreme Court's verdict against Sharif in the Panama Papers case.

The case pertains to the ownership of the Sharif family's apartments at Avenfield House, London.

India: Shivakumar prevented from entering hotel where rebel MLAs staying

Mumbai, Jul 10 (PTI) High drama was witnessed outside a hotel here on Wednesday as senior Congress leader and Karnataka Water Resources Minister D K Shivakumar was prevented from entering the premises where the rebel MLAs are stationed.

Shivakumar, who was accompanied by senior JD(S) MLAs, told reporters that he had booked a room in the hotel but was not being permitted inside.

WHO declares Sri Lanka measles free

COLOMBO, July 10 (Xinhua) -- The World Health Organization (WHO) Wednesday said that Sri Lanka had successfully eliminated measles from the island country.

The WHO praised Sri Lanka's achievement in a statement at a time when measles cases were increasing globally.

The WHO South-East Asia Regional Director Dr. Poonam Khetrapal Singh said Sri Lanka's success demonstrated its commitment, the determination of its health workforce and parents to protect children against measles.

India: CBI searches 3 districts of UP in connection with illegal mining scam

New Delhi, Jul 10 (PTI) The CBI is carrying out searches at various locations in three districts of Uttar Pradesh in connection with an illegal mining scam, officials said Wednesday.

The searches started this morning in Hamirpur, Fatehpur and Bulandshahr, they said.

Further details are awaited as the operation is still on and may be expanded during the day, the officials said.

The CBI had registered three FIRs related to the illegal mining contracts given in the state.

Indian Journalist shot at in UP

Shahjahanpur (UP), Jul 8 (PTI) A television journalist was injured after he was shot at by three persons here, police said on Tuesday.

The reporter, Ankit Sharma, was fired at on Monday and admitted to a hospital, Superintendent of Police (City) Dinesh Tripathi said.

Police suspect personal enmity behind the incident.

A case has been registered against the accused -- Pankaj Gupta, Aman Gupta and Anand Gupta -- and efforts are on to nab them, the SP added.

India: Tribal girl raped inside stationary bus in Puri

Puri, Jul 9 (PTI) A teenaged tribal girl, who works at a water park in Malatipur area in Puri district, has been allegedly raped inside a stationary bus in the pilgrim town, a senior police officer said on Tuesday.

The incident has triggered a political storm in the state, with the opposition parties, the BJP and the Congress, seeking a reply from the ruling BJD on the matter.

The 15-year-old girl, a resident of Keonjhar district, was rescued after local people spotted her crying near Sri Gundicha temple here, Puri SP Uma Shankar Dash said.
