Imran Khan says better chance of peace with India if BJP wins general elections

Islamabad, Apr 10 (PTI) Pakistan's Premier Imran Khan has said he believes there may be a better chance of peace talks with India and settle the Kashmir issue if Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party BJP wins the general elections.

India will go to elections in seven phases beginning from Thursday.

"Perhaps if the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party)....wins, some kind of settlement in Kashmir could be reached," Khan told a small group of foreign journalists in an interview.

India: NIA arrests JKLF chief Yasin Malik in terror funding case

New Delhi, Apr 10 (PTI) The National Investigation Agency on Wednesday arrested JKLF chief Yasin Malik in connection with a case related to alleged funding of terror and separatist groups in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said here.

Malik was brought to the national capital Tuesday evening after a special NIA court in Jammu gave the go ahead for his custodial interrogation by the probe agency, they said.

Indian Polls: Campaigning ends for 8 western UP seats

Lucknow, April 9 (PTI): Campaigning ended Tuesday evening in eight western Uttar Pradesh constituencies where the ruling BJP is going all out to repeat its 2014 Lok Sabha performance, a task made much tougher this time by the new SP-BSP-RLD alliance.

In the 2014 parliamentary elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party won all eight seats -- Saharanpur, Kairana, Muzaffarnagar, Bijnor, Meerut, Baghpat, Ghaziabad and Gautam Budh Nagar that go to the polls on April 11, the first phase of staggered elections.

Following an appeal by the District Election Officer Keerthi Jalli, various business houses of this south Assam district are offering discounts on jewellery, food and hospitality, and medicines.

Pakistan issues 2,200 visas to Indians

New Delhi, Apr 9 (PTI) The Pakistan High Commission Tuesday said it has issued visas to 2,200 Sikh pilgrims from India to facilitate their participation in the annual Baisakhi celebrations from April 12 to 21.

The issuance of visas by Pakistan is seen as signs of easing of tension between the two countries, and came nearly six weeks after the Balakot strike and subsequent Pakistani retaliation.

New Delhi, Apr 9 (PTI) The Election Commission has taken cognizance of Prime Mnister Narendra Modi's remarks asking first-time voters to dedicate their vote to those who carried out the air strike in Balakot, and has sought a report from poll officials in Maharashtra.

Sources in the poll panel said Tuesday that the chief electoral officer of Maharashtra has been asked to submit a report at the earliest.

India: 3 get 20-year jail for gang rape

Gurdaspur (Punjab), Apr 9 (PTI) A Punjab court sentenced three men to 20 years of imprisonment on Tuesday for raping a 25-year-old woman in Gurdaspur district five years ago and repeating the offence for over four months by blackmailing her with a video.

The sessions court sentenced Lovepreet Singh, Harvinder Singh and Prabhjot Singh to jail after they were found guilty. Two others, Gurpinder Singh and Balwinder Singh, were declared proclaimed offenders.

India: Man rapes, kills 5-yr-old cousin sister

Ghaziabad, Apr 9 (PTI) A man was arrested on Monday for allegedly raping and killing his five-year-old cousin sister here, police said.

The minor's body was recovered from a sugarcane field near Sarana village on Monday morning, police said.

The girl was abducted from Indira Puri Colony in Murad Nagar when she was playing outside of her home, they said.

Kashmir: Curfew continues for second day in Kishtwar

Jammu, April 10 (PTI) The curfew imposed in Kishtwar district following killing of senior RSS functionary Chanderkant Sharma and his PSO remained in force for the second day Wednesday even as police intensified searches to track down those involved in the killing.

The cremation of the RSS leader will take place later in the day in Kishtwar town amid heavy security.
