7 Apr 2019; DW: Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's Maldivian Democratic Party seems set to win the country's parliamentary elections, provisional results showed on Sunday.

The MDP was set to secure 59 of 87 parliamentary seats in Saturday's elections, with a turnout of almost 80%.

The elections saw the dramatic comeback of former President Mohamed Nasheed (top picture), who is set to take over the leadership of the national parliament after winning a seat in the legislature.

New Delhi/Bhopal, Apr 7; PTI/GANASHAKTI: The Income Tax Department Sunday launched pre-dawn searches on at least 50 locations in Delhi and Madhya Pradesh against people linked to state Chief Minister Kamal Nath on charges of alleged tax evasion, officials said.

A team of about 200 I-T department and police officers swooped down on these premises around 3 am and some undisclosed cash was recovered, they said.

The searches are linked to suspected movement of hawala money during the ongoing polls season and tax evasion, they said.

Jammu, Apr 6 (PTI) Ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, a senior J-K BJP leader Saturday quit the party, disappointed over its "failure" to fulfil promises made to the SC, ST and OBC communities in the state.

Jammu and Kashmir vice-president of the BJP's SC morcha, Narinder Kesar said that he along with his supporters had worked hard to ensure the saffron party's victory in the 2014 elections.

Yavatmal, Apr 7 (PTI) A 24-year-old farmer allegedly committed suicide at a village in Maharashtra's Yavatmal district, police said on Sunday.

A family member claimed that the deceased, Shreejit Vilasrao Hathe, was under stress due to his crop failure.

Hathe allegedly hanged himself to a pole in front of his house at Wadgaon village in Ralegaon tehsil on Saturday, a police official said.

Deoband, Apr 7 (PTI) Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav Sunday said the grand alliance of opposition parties in Uttar Pradesh will ensure the removal of all 'chowkidars' and the country will get a new prime minister after the Lok Sabha polls.

Taking a swipe at the ruling BJP, Akhilesh said during the holy period of Navaratri no one should lie.

Guwahati, Apr 7 (PTI) The Election Commission has banned all political advertisements in newspapers on poll day and preceding day of the polling unless it is pre-certified from the concerned authorities at state or district level.

According to a press release from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer of Assam on Sunday, no political party or candidate shall publish any advertisement in print media on poll day or one day prior to the poll day in all the phases.

New Delhi, Apr 6 (PTI) India chose a much lower orbit of less than 300 km during Mission Shakti for "capability demonstration" and to avoid threat of debris to global space assets, DRDO Chairman G Satheesh Reddy said Saturday.

His remark comes days after NASA raised concerns about the spread of debris from the Anti-Satellite Test (A-SAT) test India conducted on March 27.

Reddy, at a briefing held at the DRDO Bhawan here, said the interceptor had the capability to intercept satellites in orbit of 1,000 km.

When there was request for one single public meeting she even suggested them to organize separate meetings for both the seats between Apr 22 and 26. She did neither let them down for face to face talk nor accepting their request for public meeting.    

Lucknow, Apr 5 (PTI) Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Friday mocked Yogi Adityanath for his "Muslim League is a virus" remark, wondering whether the Uttar Pradesh chief minister has been affected by one and said the firebrand Hindutva leader "does not know anything".

"He talks of virus. He doesn't know anything. He only knows how to betray people," Yadav told reporters when asked about the remark.

Amaravati, Apr 5 (PTI): The Election Commission Friday removed Andhra Pradesh Chief Secretary Anil Chandra Punetha from the post and appointed senior-most IAS officer L V Subrahmanyam of the 1983 batch in the place of the former.

The EC stated this in a communication to the Andhra Pradesh government.
