Indian National Alliance of Journalists cautions against jingoism

New Delhi, February 23; GANASHAKTI: The National Alliance of Journalists (NAJ) has cautioned against jingoism, mental militarization and spreading hatred against communities, in the aftermath of the brutal killing of CRPF personals in Pulwama.

It has also requested colleagues in some TV channels in particular, to desist from warmongering and at times, even acting as military strategists and advisers- rather than play the role of newspersons seeking to restore peace and stability, in these sensitive times.

India: 300 Vehicles Gutted in Fire at Bengaluru Aero Show Venue

Bengaluru, February 23; GANASHAKTI: 300 vehicles were gutted in a fire that broke out in a parking lot at the venue of the 2019 Aero India show being conducted by the defence ministry at the Yelahanka air base. No casualties have been reported. The fire has been extinguished completely, said DGP of Fire Services MN Reddi. 

According to a policeman, around 100 cars were affected in the blaze after one car caught fire. To control the fire, more than 10 fire engines have been rushed to the spot.

India: Vadra moves court seeking copy of case from ED

New Delhi, Feb 23 (PTI) Robert Vadra, facing Enforcement Directorate probe in cases of money laundering, moved an application in a Delhi court Saturday, seeking copy of case-related documents with the central agency.

Special judge Arvind Kumar posted the matter for February 25.

The application was moved through senior advocate KTS Tulsi.

India: 150 people, most from Jamaat-e-Islami, detained in JK

Srinagar, Feb 23 (PTI) Nearly 150 people, mainly from the Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir including its chief Abdul Hamid Fayaz, were detained during the intervening night of Friday and Saturday as tension gripped the Valley ahead of a hearing by the Supreme Court on Article 35A of the Constitution.

Though police termed the detentions as routine saying that leaders and potential stone pelters have been picked up in the past, officials privy to the developments said this is the first major crackdown on the Jamaat-e-Islamia.

India: Girl thrown off terrace for resisting rape bid

Shahjahanpur (UP), Feb 23 (PTI) A 15-year-old girl was allegedly thrown off the terrace of her house when she resisted a rape bid by a youth in Bijlipura area here on Saturday morning.

The girl, a student of Class 10, was sleeping on the terrace when a youth from her neighbourhood tried to rape her, SP City Dinesh Tripathi said.

When the girl raised an alarm, the accused pushed her off the terrace, she said.

She suffered serious injuries and was admitted to the district hospital.

India: 13 killed, 6 injured in explosion at shop in UP

Bhadohi (UP), Feb 23 (PTI) Thirteen people, including nine from West Bengal, were killed in an explosion at a shop here on Saturday afternoon which led to the collapse of three adjacent houses, officials said.

Six people were also injured in the incident. It is suspected that some people are still trapped under the debris and a rescue operation has been launched, they said.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed grief over the loss of lives in the incident and directed the district officials to ensure proper treatment of the injured, a spokesperson said in Lucknow.

India: Monkeys declared vermin in eleven districts of HP

Shimla, Feb 23 (PTI) Monkeys have again been declared vermin for the next one year in 11 districts' 91 tehsils and sub-tehsils of Himachal Pradesh, state Forest Minister Govind Singh Thakur said here Saturday.

He said Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur had raised this matter time and again with the Centre urging that it is necessary to declare monkeys as a vermin species as the animals have been adversely affecting crops and causing harm to humans.

Afghanistan amass highest score in T20 Internationals

Dehradun, Feb 23 (PTI) Afghanistan on Saturday posted the highest total in T20 Internationals, amassing 278 for 3 against Ireland in the second game of the series at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium here.

Hazratullah Zazai (162 not out off 62) and Usman Ghani (73 off 48) set a new record for the opening-wicket partnership with a 236-run stand as Afghanistan surpassed Australia's 263 for 3 posted against Sri Lanka at Pallekele in 2016.

Honour killing in India: man burnt alive by family of girl he loved

Contai (WB), Feb 23 (PTI) A 21-year-old man was allegedly burnt alive by the family members of a girl he loved in West Bengal's East Midnapur district, police said Saturday.

The family allegedly beat up Ranjit Mondal entire Friday night before pouring petrol on him and setting him on fire, police said.

Ranjit had gone to meet the girl when the incident occurred. He was a goldsmith in Delhi.

The incident came to light when the local police found out that something was burning in an open space around 3.30 am Saturday.
