India: Girl raped & strangled to death at home

Pune (Maha), Dec 7 (PTI) A 17-year-old girl was allegedly raped and strangled to death by an unidentified person at her house in Dhayari area off Sinhagad Road here, police said.

The incident took place on Thursday, they said.

Talking to PTI, Joint Commissioner of Police Shivaji Bodkhe said the deceased lived in a tenement with her family.

"The victim's brother came home from school in the afternoon on Thursday and found his sister lying unconscious.

India: Guj man arrested for sexually assaulting stepdaughter

Ahmedabad, Dec 8 (PTI) A man was Saturday arrested in Ahmedabad's Ramol area for allegedly sexually assaulting his teenage stepdaughter, police said.

The accused was held Saturday after the 14-year-old victim's mother filed a complaint against him on Friday, said Ramol police inspector M S Kotwal.

"As per the complaint, since the last seven months, the accused used to regularly sexually assault his stepdaughter. He also threatened her to not reveal this ordeal to anyone," said Kotwal.

Taxmen raid TN distillery, seize over Rs 54 crore cash

Chennai, Dec 8 (PTI): Income Tax sleuths Saturday seized over Rs 54 crore of unaccounted cash during searches at multiple premises of a leading Tamil Nadu based distillery here.

Acting on a tip off about suspected tax evasion and backed up by days of spadework related to the company, income tax officials conducted searches at 12 premises belonging to the Director and employees of the distillery.

Russian couple grows cannabis at home in Goa; arrested

Panaji, Dec 8 (PTI) A Russian couple was arrested Saturday for allegedly cultivating cannabis inside their rented apartment in Goa, police said.

Cannabis plants, drugs and other items worth Rs 15 lakh were seized from the couple's residential apartment located in the beach village of Anjuna in North Goa, they said.

Anjuna Police Inspector C L Patil said the Russian couple, Viacheslar Terekhin and Anna Asharova (both 38), were arrested under the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Act.

Mumbai, Dec 7 (PTI) The Maharashtra government has told the Bombay High Court that it has ordered demolition of fugitive jeweller Nirav Modi's illegal bungalow built along the beach at Alibaug in adjoining Raigad district.

Government counsel advocate P B Kakade told a bench of Chief Justice Naresh Patil and Justice M S Karnik on Thursday that it had served demolition notices to another 58 private properties in the area constructed in violation of the state's rules and coastal zone norms.

India: Woman poisoned to death over dowry demands in UP

Muzaffarnagar, Dec 7 (PTI) A woman was allegedly poisoned to death by her husband and in-laws over demands for dowry in Uttar Pradesh's Shamli district, police said on Friday.

The woman, Rashim, was found dead at her residence in Khedki village under Garhi Pukhta police station on Thursday evening, they said.

According to a complaint lodged by her father, Rajender, Rashim's in-laws called her parents on Thursday and asked them to visit their daughter as she was unwell.
