India: Kanpur's Jajmau remains wet in morning, afternoon turns humid

Kanpur: Kanpur City is among thirty districts where rains are expected.

According to the news reports, there remains a chance of further spells of rains. 

In the morning today the sky was heavily overcast by dark clouds and showers took place after 7 a.m. in the Jajmau area.

However, the evening temperature has turned out to be humid. People are saying that there was a difference in the situation.

Algeria sentences ex-PM to 10 years in prison for 'corruption'

18 Oct 2021; MEMO: An Algerian court yesterday upheld a 10-year imprisonment sentence against former Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia in the installation and import of Sovac vehicles case.

The court upheld the ruling for the case in which the Algerian businessman Mourad Oulami was handed a 10-year imprisonment sentence, while his brother Haider, was sentenced to five years in jail.

In the same case, the former Aerian energy minister, Youcef Yousf, was sentenced to three years in prison.

India: Cattle deaths on railway track also occur on Kanpur sections

Kanpur: Heads of cattle being run over by trains have been a perennial problem for Indian Railways. Each such case damages assets, delays trains and poses a safety challenge. 

Stretches like Firozabd-Makhhanpur, Etawah-Phaphund in Tundla-Kanpur sections; between Chanderi-Chakeri, near Kanpur; Pora-Jalesar near Hathras; Delwara- Jhakhaura in Jhansi-Lalitpur section; in the Mathura-Kosikalaan section and in the Agra-Dholpur section in UP, are marked as 'vulnerable spots'.

India: Kerala landslide toll touches 18 as rescuers dig deeper

Kottayam/Idukki, Oct 17 (PTI) The toll from disastrous flooding caused by heavy rains and landslides in hilly areas of two central Kerala districts rose to 18 as rescue workers recovered more bodies from the rubbles on Sunday.

State Revenue Minister K Rajan said the rescue workers have recovered 15 bodies from the debris and slush of the landslides that had hit various places of Idukki and Kottayam districts on Saturday.

India: BJP needs yogya government not Yogi government: Akhilesh

Lucknow, Oct 17 (PTI) Samajwadi Party president and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav Sunday attacked the BJP dispensation, saying the state needs a 'yogya' (competent) government and not a Yogi government.

Speaking to reporters at the party's headquarters here, he further alleged the BJP "has no work to do" aside from changing names. "It believes in filling pockets instead of potholes."

"Uttar Pradesh needs a 'yogya' (competent) government and not a Yogi government," he said.

India: Several opposition leaders join BJP in Assam

Guwahati, Oct 17 (PTI) A host of opposition leaders, including two elected representatives of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) and tea tribe youth leaders, Sunday joined the ruling BJP in Assam.

Assam BJP president Bhabesh Kalita welcomed the new members into the party, a statement issued by it said.

Among those who joined the saffron party are two Members of Council Legislative Assembly (MCLA) of BTR, Rajib Brahma and Prabhat Basumatary, and tea tribe leaders Gautam Dhanowar and Pradip Majhi.

India: BJP govt responsible for worsening situation in J-K: NPP

Jammu, Oct 17 (PTI) The Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) on Sunday condemned the recent killings of civilians and security personnel in attacks by terrorists and said the BJP government is responsible for the worsening situation in the union territory.

NPP chairman and former minister Harsh Dev Singh said the fast deteriorating security scenario in J-K has exposed the haughty and supercilious claims of the BJP government at the Centre of having curbed militancy post reorganisation of the erstwhile state.

India: Old man ventures self-immolation over police inaction in land case

Kanpur: A 55-year-old man set himself on fire by pouring petrol protesting police inaction in a land dispute case in Shyam Nagar area here on Sunday, as was reported.

Identified as Ishwar Chandra Dikshit, the old man has been admitted with serious burn injuries to the Lala Lajpat Rai hospital here.

His daughters alleged that he took the extreme step due to police inaction in a dispute over their land at Bidhnu area in the district.

He has been living on rent in the house of Radhey Shyam Tiwari at Chanakyapuri in Shyam Nagar for the past four years.

Road accident kills 5 in Afghanistan

MAHMUD-E-RAQI, Afghanistan, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- Five commuters lost their lives as their car turned turtle in eastern Kapisa province of Afghanistan on Saturday, a local official said Sunday.

According to the official who declined to be named, the five commuters were killed and another was injured when their car plunged into a ravine and turned upside down due to careless driving in Shikhan Daraghous of Nijrab district Saturday evening.

Villagers have also confirmed the accident, saying the commuters were all Afghans who were sightseeing in the area.

India: Two non-locals shot dead in Kashmir

Srinagar; 16 Oct 2021 (UMMN): Two non-Kashmiris were shot dead in Srinagar and Pulwama districts of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, police said.

Arvind Kumar Sah (30), a resident of the Banka area in Bihar was shot in in Srinagar, and Saghir Ahmad, a carpenter hailing from Uttar Pradesh was shot in Pulwama district, a police official said.

Former chief minister and national Conference leader Omar Abdullah condemned the killings.
