India: Rapid showers lash Kanpur's Jajmau area on Sunday

Kanpur: It was unexpected showers on Sunday afternoon when the high-speed wind started blasting and the sky turned black.

With the heavy showers that lashed in the Jajmau area brought relief among the residents suffering from humid weather.

The people on the road began taking refuge under some shade. Some even rushed towards shops.

The showers were so rapid as vehicle owners find it difficult to proceed onward. Therefore they stopped on the spot and parked their two-wheelers on the roadside.

Heavy rains, floods leave 8 dead, 12 missing in south India

NEW DELHI (AP) — At least eight people have died and a dozen are feared missing after a day of torrential rains in the southern Indian state of Kerala.

Rescue operations were underway on Sunday after heavy rains lashed the state the day before, triggering flash floods and landslides, the Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency reported.

The National Disaster Response Force and the Indian Army deployed teams to help with rescue efforts in two of the worst-hit districts, Kottayam and Idukki, where a dozen people are still feared missing.

India: One more arrest in Singhu border lynching case

Amritsar (Pb), Oct 16 (PTI) A second arrest was made on Saturday in connection with the lynching of a Dalit man at a farmers' protest site at the Singhu border, police said.

Narain Singh, belonging to the Sikhs' Nihang order, was arrested by the Amritsar Rural police at Amarkot village in Amritsar district, they said.

On Friday, Sarabjit Sigh was the first person to be arrested in connection with the case.

A court in Sonipat on Saturday remanded him to police custody for seven days.

India: Teen girl dies by suicide after being molested in UP

Fatehpur (UP), Oct 16 (PTI) A 15-year-old girl allegedly died by suicide in a village under Malwan area here after she was molested by a youth from the same neighbourhood, police said on Saturday.

The victim apparently consumed some poisonous substance late on Friday night and later died in the district hospital during treatment on Saturday, SHO of Malwan police station Arvind Singh said.

India: 3-year-old girl raped, strangled to death in UP

Fatehpur (UP), Oct 16 (PTI) A three-year-old child was allegedly raped and killed by a youth in a village under Khaga Kotwali police station area here, police said on Saturday.

The youth has been arrested in the case, police said.

The child, who was living with her maternal grandmother, was found dead on Friday evening in a rented room of the youth living in the neighbourhood, (SHO) in-charge of Khaga Kotwali, Santosh Kumar Sharma said.

India: Petrol, diesel price hiked again; cost 30% more than ATF sold to airlines

New Delhi, Oct 17 (PTI) Petrol and diesel price on Sunday was hiked again by 35 paise a litre and the auto fuels now cost a third more than the rate at which ATF is sold to airlines.

The fourth straight day of 35 paise per litre hike sent petrol and diesel rates to record highs across the country.

The price of petrol in Delhi rose to its highest-ever level of Rs 105.84 a litre and Rs 111.77 per litre in Mumbai, according to a price notification of state-owned fuel retailers.

India: Normal traffic becomes operational on Delhi-Howrah line

Kanpur: The Delhi-Howrah Up line has now become operational since Friday night, while the track on the down line could be restored at early morning on Saturday.

Giving this information, the Chief Public Relations Officer, NCR, Shivam Sharma told that following the derailment  trains were diverted and delayed.

However, restoration work of about several hours, the track going towards New Delhi was opened at 12.15 a.m. and the line towards Howrah was opened for normal traffic at 6.30 a.m. on Saturday.

New Delhi, Oct 16 (PTI) Days after some sections within the Congress questioned the absence of an elected party chief, Sonia Gandhi on Saturday asserted that she is a full-time, hands-on party president and leaders need not speak to her through the media.

Without naming anyone, Gandhi, in a message to the G23, said at the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting that while every member wants the party's revival, it can happen only with unity, self-control, discipline and by keeping the party's interests paramount

Muslims, Hindus protest amid communal violence in Bangladesh

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) — Protests erupted for a second day in Bangladesh’s capital on Saturday, amid a wave of violence against local Hindus following a viral social media image perceived as insulting to the country’s Muslim majority.

Some 10,000 protesters — many of them carrying banners of Islamist political parties — took to the streets outside the main mosque of the capital, Dhaka, a day after demonstrations on the same site ended in clashes with police.

The crowd chanted “Down with the enemies of the Islam” and “Hang the culprits”.

Indian police probe murder at farmers’ protest site, detain suspect

MUMBAI (India), Oct 16 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Police investigating the killing of a Sikh man at the site of an ongoing farmers’ protest in New Delhi said on Saturday they had arrested a suspect from a Sikh warrior sect, after the mutilated body was found strung up on a police barricade.

The 35-year-old victim was beaten to death on Friday by a group of men who had accused him of desecrating Sikh holy texts, according to media reports. One of the man’s hands was hacked off, the reports said.
