Israel: reservist army doctors end voluntary service in protest against judicial overhaul

20 July 2023; MEMO: Around 300 Israeli army reservists announced on Wednesday that they are suspending their voluntary service as doctors in protest against the judicial overhaul being pushed through by the far-right government coalition. The announcement came a day after 161 air force reservists said that they would no longer turn up for voluntary duty.

Tunisia borrows $87.1m from African Development Bank for grain production

20 July 2023; MEMO: Tunisia has borrowed $87.1 million from the African Development Bank (AfDB) to support the country's grain production, Anadolu has reported. The loan agreement was signed by Economy and Planning Minister Samir Saied and AfDB Deputy Director General for North Africa Region, Malinne Blomberg.

Palestine: Israeli official asks priest to hide crucifix in occupied Jerusalem

20 July 2023; MEMO: An official at occupied Jerusalem's Western Wall asked a German Christian priest on Wednesday to hide his crucifix during a visit to the site, the Times of Israel has reported. Nikodemus Schnabel was accompanying Germany's Federal Education Minister at the time.

A reporter for German news outlet Der Spiegel filmed the incident and posted it on social media with an explanation of what happened.

PA calls on Palestinians to file complaints against Israeli crimes via ICC online system

20 July 2023; MEMO: Palestinian Authority (PA) called on Palestinian people, groups and individuals, to file complaints against Israeli crimes via the ICC's online platform.

Speaking to Voice of Palestine, Minister of Justice Mohammad Shalaldeh said that the ICC is to launch an online platform to let people file their complaints against Israeli crimes.

He said that this online gateway is to gather documentation of Israeli crimes.

Iraq: Hundreds storm Swedish embassy and set it on fire

20 July 2023; MEMO: Hundreds of Iraqi protesters stormed the Swedish embassy in the capital, Baghdad, at dawn today, and set it on fire.

Supporters of Muqtada Al-Sadr had called for a protest in front of the embassy to coincide with Salwan Momika's plan to burn the Quran in Sweden once again.

Momika threatened to burn the Qur'an, along with the Iraqi flag, in front of the Iraqi Embassy in Sweden.

Morocco Rescued 854 Illegal Immigrants Off Coasts

RABAT, Jul 19 (NNN-MAP) – The Moroccan navy rescued 854 illegal immigrants from Jul 10 to 17, off the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts.

Some 400 people were rescued in the waters, off the southern Moroccan coast, while heading to Spanish Canary Islands, in the Atlantic.

The illegal immigrants, mostly from sub-Saharan countries, experienced difficulties in makeshift boats, kayaks, and jet skies. They were transferred to the nearest Moroccan ports and handed over to the competent security authorities, the report said.

UN Refugee Agency Calls For Immediate Action To Address Funding Crisis In Jordan

AMMAN, Jul 19 (NNN-PETRA) – The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), yesterday, called for taking immediate action to address its funding crisis, to avoid dire consequences for refugees.

Dominik Bartsch, the UN refugee agency’s representative in Jordan, said that, the current shortfall in funding for refugee response is threatening the significant progress made over the past decade, the state-run Al Mamlaka TV reported.
