Kuwait signs contract with Turkiye to buy $367m worth of drones

14 June 2023; MEMO: Kuwait has concluded a contract worth $367 million with Turkish defence firm, Baykar, to buy its TB2 drones through direct negotiations between the two governments, the Kuwaiti army said in a statement on Tuesday, Reuters reports.

The statement did not reveal how many drones would be delivered to Kuwait or when.

Algeria President visits Russia

13 June 2023; MEMO: Algerian President, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, started a 3-day official visit to Russia on Tuesday for talks on boosting bilateral cooperation, Anadolu Agency reports.

In a statement, the Algerian Presidency said the visit comes upon an invitation from Russian President, Vladimir Putin, for talks on strengthening cooperation between Algeria and Russia.

Lebanon will not be able to pay salaries by end of June: Prime Minister

13 June 2023; MEMO: Lebanon's caretaker Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, said Tuesday that his government will not be able to pay salaries to civil servants by the end of June, Anadolu Agency reports.

"The government will not be able to pay salaries if Parliament does not approve additional appropriations for wages," Mikati said in a statement following a Cabinet meeting.

Arab League calls on US to stand against Israel settlement

14 June 2023; MEMO: Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, yesterday called on the US to take a stand against illegal Israeli settlement.

This came in response to Israeli plans to build more than 4,000 settlement units in the occupied Palestinian West Bank.

Spanish waste is being smuggled in to Morocco, gov't must act: MP says

14 June 2023; MEMO: A member of the Moroccan parliament has questioned what measures the government has put in place to protect the kingdom from being a site to dump foreign rubbish.

This comes after media outlets published details of an investigation carried out by the Spanish authorities into the smuggling of tonnes of plastic waste into Morocco and other countries in Africa.

Israel did not attend midwifery conference as Indonesia bans its flag

14 June 2023; MEMO: No Israeli delegation participated in the 33rd Congress of the International Confederation of Midwives being held in the Indonesian island of Bali after they were told the Israeli flag would not be raised at the conference, Israeli media reported.

Russian Ambassador Says U.S. Sanctions Pose Major Obstacle To Syria’s Rebuilding

DAMASCUS, Jun 12 (NNN-SANA) – Russian Ambassador to Syria, Alexander Efimov, said yesterday that, the U.S. sanctions on Syria are posing a major obstacle in the war-torn country’s reconstruction.

In remarks to the local online al-Watan newspaper, Efimov hailed the recent restoration of relations between Syria and other Arab countries, mainly Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states, but said, the economic cooperation is stranded by the persistent U.S. sanctions.
