Israel closes West Bank, Gaza crossings during Knesset elections

31 October 2022; MEMO: Israeli occupation authorities said yesterday that they would be imposing a comprehensive closure of crossings between Israel and the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip during tomorrow's 25th Knesset election.

The occupation forces said in a statement that the closure would begin at 00:00 tomorrow and be in place for 24 hours "pending a situational assessment."

Israel: Netanyahu says to 'neutralise' Lebanon maritime deal

31 October 2022; MEMO: Israeli leader, Benjamin Netanyahu, said Monday he will "neutralise" a recent maritime border deal with Lebanon if he is elected prime minister.

"I will behave as I did with the Oslo Accords," Netanyahu said in an interview with Army Radio.

He said that the Oslo Accords with the Palestinians "were not cancelled, they were neutralised."

The former premier, however, did not detail his specific intentions for the border agreement with Lebanon during his Monday's interview.

Israel bans Palestinian farmers from their land, destroy 180 olive tre

31 October 2022; MEMO: Israeli settlers razed 180 olive trees belonging to Palestinians today in the villages of Tarqumiyah and Qaryut, located northwest of Hebron and Nablus, reported Arab48.

This comes in addition to the Israeli occupation forces imposing a ban on Palestinian farmers in Beit Furik, based in eastern Nablus, from picking olives, just hours before the farm owners were due to harvest their crop.

Iran seizes foreign tanker carrying 11m litres of oil

31 October 2022; MEMO: Iran has seized a foreign-flagged oil tanker in Gulf waters which was carrying 11 million litres of oil, Iranian authorities have said.

According to Chief Justice of Hormozgan Province, Mojtaba Ghahremani, forces from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) today seized the ship after boarding it and discovering its cargo of 11 million litres of oil, in what is reportedly part of a huge smuggling operation.

Anchored Ukraine grain ships 'pose navigations risks' in Istanbul

01 Nov 2022; MEMO: Ukrainian grain ships anchored outside of Istanbul Strait waiting for inspection "pose navigations risks" following Russia's suspension of the Black Sea Grain Initiative, Turkiye told UN Security Council on Monday, Anadolu News Agency reports.

There were 97 loaded vessels and 15 inbound vessels registered for inspection around Istanbul as of Monday morning local time, Turkish Ambassador to the UN, Feridun Sinirlioglu, said at a Security Council meeting.

Iran indicts 1,000 "rioters" over unrest, plans public trials

Palestine: Abbas giving himself 'absolute authority'; Rights group

01 Nov 2022; MEMO: Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas has given himself "absolute authority" through the formation of Supreme Council for Judicial Bodies and Committees, the Palestine Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) said yesterday.

In a statement, the PCHR said the presidential decree, which ordered the formation of this council, "was a dangerous precedent" as Abbas has become the "actual ruler of all authorities in the occupied territories."

Turkiye is a powerful partner for Uganda

01 Nov 2022; MEMO: Uganda's President, Yoweri Museveni, said on Monday that Turkiye has become one of the most powerful partners for Uganda, Anadolu News Agency reports.

In a message to Turkiye's President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Museveni said Turkish-Ugandan relations have gained momentum in every field.

Museveni also congratulated Erdogan and the Turkish people on the 99th anniversary of the Republic.

Algeria hopes Palestine will be reinstated as top Arab interest

01 Nov 2022; MEMO: Algerian President Abdulmajid Tebboune expressed hopes that Arab leaders meeting in his country today will reinstate the Palestine cause as the top Arab interest, QNA reported.

Speaking to QNA, Tebboune said that the Arab issue "has been the mother of all issues," wishing that the Arab League summit being held today will return it to the centre of the Arab and international agendas.

Morocco king cancels participation in Arab summit

01 Nov 2022; MEMO: Morocco's King Mohammed VI has cancelled his participation in the Arab summit held in Algeria, Al Quds Al Arabi has reported. Citing the French magazine Jeune Afrique, the report pointed out that according to Moroccan and then Algerian diplomatic sources, the king was one of the first leaders to confirm their participation in the summit, which was a source of controversy because of the tense relations between Rabat and Algiers.
