5 former European foreign ministers accuse Israel of being 'apartheid state'

29 October 2022; MEMO: In an open letter, five former European ministers labelled Israel's policies against Palestinians as "the crime of apartheid", Anadolu News Agency reports.

"We see no alternative but to acknowledge that Israel's policies and practices against the Palestinians amount to the crime of apartheid," they said in a letter published by French daily, Le Monde, on Thursday.

Saudi billionaire Al Waleed Bin Talal joins Musk in new Twitter company

29 October 2022; MEMO: Saudi billionaire Al Waleed Bin Talal, one of the owners of Twitter, joined the new private Twitter company announced by Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk after acquiring the world's most famous micro-blogging site.

This was reported on Friday in a statement by the Kingdom Holding Company (KHC) and the private office of Prince Al Waleed Bin Talal.

725kg Heroin Cargo Seized In Southern Iran: Police

TEHRAN, Oct 28 (NNN-IRNA) – Iranian police seized 725 kg of heroin in a cargo, in the southern province of Hormuzgan, the IRIB News Agency reported.

The packaged heroin is the heaviest of its kind seized over the past 10 years in Hormuzgan Province, Gholamreza Jafari, the provincial police commander, was quoted by the report as saying.

Two smugglers were arrested on a trailer, transferring the heroin in 723 packages, Jafari added.

Another Palestinian Killed In West Bank Clashes: Medics

RAMALLAH, Oct 28 (NNN-WAFA) – One more Palestinian was killed and two others seriously injured, in clashes today with Israeli soldiers, in the northern West Bank city of Nablus, Palestinian medics said.

Palestinian security sources and eyewitnesses said that, a 47-year-old man was shot dead, when Israeli soldiers opened fire at a Palestinian car, passing by the Israeli army checkpoint, near the village of Huwara south of Nablus.

Marcos lauds China-funded bridge for helping boost growth in southern Philippines

DAVAO, the Philippines, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- A China-funded bridge that connects the Philippines' third largest city Davao and a tourist island will help boost tourism and economic growth in the country's southern region, said President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos on Thursday at the project's groundbreaking ceremony.

The ceremony kicked off the construction of the 3.81-km two-way, four-lane Samal Island-Davao City Connector Bridge that will ease the access for tourists to the Island Garden City of Samal.

At least 42 dead in floods, landslides in south Philippines

COTABATO, Philippines (AP) — Flash floods and landslides set off by torrential rains swamped a southern Philippine province, killing at least 42 people, leaving 16 others missing and trapping some residents on their roofs, officials said Friday.

Most of the victims were swept away by rampaging floodwaters and drowned or were hit by debris-filled mudslides in three towns in hard-hit Maguindanao province, said Naguib Sinarimbo, the interior minister for a five-province Muslim autonomous region run by former guerrillas.

Qatar summons German envoy over World Cup rights criticism

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Qatar summoned the German ambassador on Friday over remarks by Germany’s interior minister, who appeared to criticize the decision to award the World Cup to the Gulf Arab nation because of its human rights record.

It was the first time Qatar has summoned an ambassador following years of heavy international scrutiny of its treatment of migrant workers and criminalization of homosexual relations, and comes as authorities there appear increasingly fed up with such criticism.

Iraqi Parliament approves new government headed by Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani

28 October 2022; MEMO: Iraqi lawmakers approved a new government on Thursday, ending over a year of deadlock but still faces many challenges, Reuters reports.

Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, 52, who previously served as Iraq's Human Rights Minister as well as Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, will head the new government.

Sudani's picks for 21 ministries passed during a Parliament vote on the Cabinet. He named the Head of state-run South Gas Co. (SGC), Hayan Abdul Ghani, as Oil Minister.
