US, China aircraft carriers sail near Taiwan as Beijing warns of forceful measures after top US-Taiwan officials meet

Beijing, Apr 6 (PTI) China and the US flexed their naval might by deploying aircraft carriers in a rare showdown in the Taiwan Strait, as Beijing on Thursday fumed over US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy's high-profile meeting with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen.

The Taiwanese defence ministry said a Chinese naval fleet led by the Shandong aircraft carrier passed through the Bashi Channel - which runs between the self-ruled island and the Philippines - before reaching waters southeast of Taiwan.

China and India to account for half of global economic growth in 2023, says IMF chief

Washington, Apr 6 (PTI) The IMF chief on Thursday said that the world economy is expected to grow at less than 3 per cent this year, with China and India expected to account for half of global growth in 2023.

International Monetary Fund (IMF) managing director Kristalina Georgieva warned that a sharp slowdown in the world economy last year following the raging pandemic and Russia's military invasion of Ukraine would continue this year.

Quadripartite meeting on Syria agrees to continue consultations

Participants in the quadripartite meeting held at the level of deputy foreign ministers of Turkiye, Russia, Iran and Syria have agreed to continue consultations regarding Syria, Anadolu news agency reported.

World Bank cuts India's growth forecast

New Delhi/Washington, Apr 4 (PTI) The World Bank and the Asian Development Bank on Tuesday projected moderation in the Indian economic growth between 6.3 per cent and 6.4 per cent due to a slowdown in consumption and challenging external conditions.

The World Bank in its latest 'India Development Update' (IDU) slashed the GDP forecast to 6.3 per cent against the earlier estimate of 6.6 per cent in 2023-24 (FY24).
