KHARTOUM, 23 Feb 2019; AA: Sudanese president has appointed Minister of Defense Awad Ibn Oaf as first vice president of the country, a presidential decree said on Saturday.

According to a statement issued by the media office of the presidency, former Governor of Al-Gazeera state Mohamed Tahir Aila has also been appointed as new prime minister of the country.

KHARTOUM, Feb. 22 (Xinhua) -- Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir on Friday declared a state of emergency in Sudan for one year in the wake of popular protests in the country.

"I declare the state of emergency all over Sudan for one year," said Bashir in a speech to the Sudanese people from the Republican Palace.

He also said to delay the procedures on a constitutional amendment that was supposed to allow him to run for a new term.

KHARTOUM, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir said on Wednesday that 2019 would be a year for peace in the country.

"2019 will be a year for peace and silence the sound of the gun permanently," al-Bashir said while addressing a celebration of the Popular Defense Forces in Khartoum.

He renewed his government's concern with the youth, saying that they "constitute a positive energy. They are the future of Sudan, and we are concerned with the youth and seek to achieve their aspirations."

KHARTOUM; 31 Jan 2019; AA: Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir on Thursday announced that his country’s eastern border with neighboring Eritrea would reopen after one year of closure, according to Sudanese state television.

“I announce here, from Kassala, that we are opening the border with Eritrea because they are our brothers and our people,” he said.

KHARTOUM, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- The death toll in Sudan's protests has risen to 24, said Amer Mohamed Ibrahim, head of a Sudanese government fact-finding committee in charge of investigating the recent protests in Sudan on Saturday.

The Attorney General in Sudan Omer Ahmed Mohamed received reports from the head of the higher committee and heads of the states' committees to follow the investigations on the recent protests in Gadarif, Nahral-Neel, White Nile, Khartoum and Northern States, said Ibrahim at a press conference in Khartoum.

KHARTOUM, Jan. 1 (Xinhua) -- The Central Bank of Sudan said on Tuesday that it intends to reduce the country's inflation rate to 27.1 percent in 2019.

"The policies of the Central Bank of Sudan for 2019 intend to achieve monetary and financial stability to realize sustainable growth," Mohamed Khair al-Zubair, governor of Sudan's central bank, said at a press conference in the capital Khartoum.

The central bank hopes to "contribute to achieving a real growth rate in GDP estimated at about 5.1 percent," he added.

KHARTOUM, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir on Monday issued a decree to form a fact-finding committee to investigate the recent protests in Sudan, official SUNA news agency reported.

According to the decree, the committee will be chaired by Sudan's Justice Minister Mohamed Ahmed Salim, the report said.

Since Dec. 19, various areas in Sudan, including the capital Khartoum, have witnessed popular protests over the deteriorating economic conditions and price hikes of basic commodities.

KHARTOUM, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) -- Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir on Sunday said the government will not tolerate sabotage or damage to personal or property security.

He made the remarks when addressing leaders of the Sudanese police in capital Khartoum.

"We will not neglect the security of the homeland, of the citizens, or of the public and private properties as this is our duty (to protect them)," he said.

Bashir further said the police forces are doing great at their duty.

CAIRO (AP) — Sudan’s military on Sunday pledged to stand by President Omar Bashir, according to a tweet by the country’s state news agency, a timely show of support as the embattled leader faces ongoing street protests decrying worsening economic conditions and demanding that he step down.

“The armed forces assert that it stands behind its leadership and its keen interest in safeguarding the people’s achievements and the nation’s security, safety along with its blood, honor and assets,” said the tweet, quoting a military statement.

KHARTOUM, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- Ministers of Sudan's new government on Saturday took the constitutional oath before Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir.

"There are priorities for this new government in improving the livelihood of the people, addressing the economic situation and achieving peace and stability," Bushara Juma'a Aror, Sudan's new information minister, told reporters following the oath-taking ceremony.

Interior Minister Ahmed Bilal Osman reiterated that the current economic crisis represents the main challenge for the new government.
