UN expert commends Malaysia’s leadership on Myanmar crisis

KUALA LUMPUR, June 23 (NNN-Bernama) — United Nations (UN) Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, Thomas Andrews, has expressed his appreciation for Malaysia’s increasing leadership on the crisis in Myanmar.

Speaking at a press conference in conjunction with his visit to Malaysia, here Thursday, he also urged other Southeast Asian states to adopt a similar approach to address the human rights catastrophe in Myanmar.

SEMICON Southeast Asia 2022 underscores significance of E&E industry in the region

GEORGE TOWN (Malaysia), June 21 (NNN–Bernama) — The region’s premier gathering of the semiconductor and microelectronics industry, SEMICON Southeast Asia 2022, underscores the significance of the Electrical and Electronics (E&E) industry both in Malaysia and the broader Southeast Asia region. 

The conference’s main organiser Semiconductor Equipment & Materials International (SEMI) president and chief executive officer (CEO) Ajit Manocha said the semiconductor industry has coped well and shown strong growth despite unprecedented challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Climate change: Malaysian govt to formulate National Adaptation Plan

KUALA LUMPUR, June 21 (NNN-Bernama) — Malaysian government will formulate a National Adaptation Plan (MyNAP) relating to the impact of climate change, which will include a long-term action plan and strategies for various sectors, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said.

He said the sectors include public health, infrastructure, water resources and security, agriculture, forestry and biodiversity.

Malaysia Reports 2,092 New COVID-19 Infections, Four More Deaths

KUALA LUMPUR, Jun 14 (NNN-BERNAMA) – Malaysia reported 2,092 new COVID-19 infections as of midnight, bringing the national total to 4,528,390, according to the health ministry.

The ministry reported four more deaths, bringing the death toll to 35,716. No new imported cases were reported.

The ministry also reported 1,876 new recoveries, bringing the total number of cured and discharged to 4,470,067.

There are 22,607 active cases, with 24 being held in intensive care and 12 of those in need of assisted breathing.

Malaysian Govt Agrees To Abolish Mandatory Death Penalty

KUALA LUMPUR, June 10 (NNN-Bernama) — The Malaysian government has agreed to abolish the mandatory death penalty and to substitute it with other sentences which are subject to the discretion of the court.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said the decision was reached after he presented the Report on Substitute Sentences for the Mandatory Death Penalty at the Cabinet meeting last Wednesday.

Malaysia An Important Partner of Turkmenistan In Trade, Economy, Investment — Ambassador

KUALA LUMPUR, May 21 (NNN-Bernama) — Malaysia is one of the important and traditional partners of Turkmenistan in trade, economic and investment spheres, said Turkmenistan’s ambassador to Malaysia Muhammetnyyaz Mashalov.

Mashalov said that an example of the effective use of existing mutual opportunities in this regard was the long-term partnership with Malaysian company Petronas Carigali, which invests heavily in the fuel and energy sector in his country.

59 Countries Participate In International Economic Summit Russia-Islamic World

KUALA LUMPUR, May 20 (NNN-Bernama) — Fifty-nine countries are taking part in the ongoing 13th International Economic Summit: Russia-Islamic World (Kazan Summit), Russia’s largest platform for cooperation with the Islamic world.

The three-day summit began on Thursday at Kazan City, which is the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, which witnessed the participation of 44 Muslim countries, among the total 59 countries. Kazan has received the status of “OIC Youth Capital – 2022”.

Malaysian ringgit hits RM4.40 to US dollar on global recession concerns

KUALA LUMPUR, May 19 (NNN-Bernama) — Malaysian ringgit closed lower today, hitting RM4.40 against the US dollar on global recession concerns, said an analyst.

At 6 pm, the local note stood at  4.4030/4060 versus the greenback from Wednesday’s close of 4.3960/3975.

SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes said although the US dollar was not so much in demand due to global economic growth concerns, sentiments for emerging currencies, including the ringgit, remained weak, triggering a wide sell-off.

Malaysia’s deputy foreign minister to visit Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan

PUTRAJAYA (Malaysia), May 18 (NNN-Bernama) — Malaysia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Kamarudin Jaffar will undertake working visits to Uzbekistan from May 19 to 21 and Kazakhstan from May 22 to 25.

The Foreign Ministry (Wisma Putra) in a statement on Wednesday said in Uzbekistan, Kamarudin is scheduled to meet the country’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Trade and Investment, Acting Foreign Minister as well as the Speaker of the House of Representatives. 

Tourism Malaysia to boost partnership with international airlines to attract more tourists

PUTRAJAYA (Malaysia), May 16 (NNN-Bernama) — Tourism Malaysia is enhancing partnership with international airlines to welcome more tourists from West Asia back to Malaysia, said its director-general Zainuddin Abdul Wahab.

He said Tourism Malaysia is currently ramping up its marketing efforts to lure tourists from West Asia by launching roadshows in Iran, Oman and Qatar from May 13 to 21 in conjunction with Malaysia’s border reopening.
