Kuala Lumpur, Oct 27 (AP/PTI) A key ally's reaffirmed support for Malaysia's prime minister offers him a respite after his failed bid to declare a coronavirus emergency, but his political survival still hangs in the balance.

Eight months after taking office, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin is being challenged by opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, who says he has majority support to form a new government with defections from Muhyiddin's ruling coalition.

Malaysia: APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting to be held virtually in November

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders' Meeting will be held virtually on Nov. 20, the Malaysian Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) said on Monday.

The meeting, to be held virtually for the first time due to the COVID-19 situation, will be participated in by leaders of APEC economies, it said in a statement.

Malaysian PM acknowledges king’s rebuff of virus emergency

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Malaysia’s prime minister said his government was prioritizing protecting people from COVID-19 amid a new outbreak after the king rebuffed his emergency proposal that critics saw as an undemocratic attempt to hold onto power.

Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s proposal for the king to declare a state of emergency to fight the coronavirus would have suspended Parliament and let him dodge an imminent test of his support. Muhyiddin could then govern through ordinances that could not be challenged in court.

ADB urges Southeast Asian countries to expand digital infrastructures

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 21 (NNN-BERNAMA) — The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has urged Southeast Asian countries to expand investments in digital infrastructures to ensure equitable access to technology as economies recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

President Masatsugu Asakawa said the region must close the digital divide and expand existing investments in digital infrastructure by building further and higher quality mobile broadband infrastructure and ensuring affordable internet access and coverage.

Malaysia: APEC’s working group to discuss transparency in managing COVID-19 funds

PUTRAJAYA, Oct 19 (NNN-BERNAMA) — Transparency in the management of COVID-19 funds will be among the agenda of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Anti-Corruption and Transparency Experts’ Working Group (ACTWG) virtual meetings beginning today until Oct 23.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in a statement today said the meeting, attended by representatives from 21 APEC economies, would also discuss anti-corruption efforts and initiatives in the Asia Pacific region.

COVID-19 vaccine: Malaysia to ink MoU with China

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 14 (NNN-BERNAMA) — The Malaysian government will sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with China to ensure Malaysia will be among the first to receive the COVID-19 vaccine from the country once it is, as expected, successfully developed by end of the year.

Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said that through talks between Foreign Minister Hishammuddin Hussein and his visiting Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, China had agreed to list Malaysia as a priority recipient of the vaccine after it has completed clinical trials.

In response to a question on the impact of the U.S. Indo-Pacific strategy on the East Asia cooperation, Wang told a joint press conference with Malaysian Foreign Minister Hishammuddin Hussein that East Asia is the most dynamic region in today's world, and is also the economy with the biggest potential going forward.
