China, Asean capable of keeping peace in South China Sea – FM Wang Yi

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 13 (NNN-BERNAMA) — China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Tuesday that China and ASEAN have the full capacity, wisdom as well as the responsibility to maintain peace and tranquillity in the South China Sea.

Speaking in a joint news conference after a bilateral meeting with Malaysia’s Foreign Minister Hishammuddin Hussein here Tuesday, Wang said ASEAN should also work together to “remove external obstruction” in the South China Sea.

Malaysia’s Anwar meets king in bid to form new government

KUALA LUMPUR (AP) — Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim said he presented the nation’s king Tuesday with evidence that he has enough support among lawmakers to topple the prime minister and form a new government, an assertion the palace denied.

Anwar said he presented the monarch with evidence of the support he has from over 120 lawmakers, which would allow him to unseat Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

Malaysia-Vietnam relations broad-based, firm – Envoy

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 6 (NNN-BERNAMA) — Relations between Malaysia and Vietnam have been described as broad-based and substantive, with both countries enjoying vibrant ties in a wide range of sectors – namely trade and investment, education, security, defence, and people-to-people ties.

Malaysia: Strong quake rocks Fiji Islands

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 6 (NNN-BERNAMA) — An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale hit the Fiji Islands at 6.11 pm today.

According to a statement issued by the Malaysian Meteorological Department, the epicentre of the earthquake was 323 kilometres (km) east of Laucala, Fiji, at a depth of 629 km.

“However, the earthquake did not pose a tsunami threat to Malaysia,” the statement said.

Malaysia: Ministry to investigate claims of forced labour by FGV

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 1 (NNN-BERNAMA) — The Ministry of Human Resources will seek detailed information on the alleged use of forced labour by plantation company FGV Holdings Berhad (FGV) in its production process.

Minister Datuk Seri M. Saravanan said thorough investigation will be carried out before any action is taken.

“Be patient. This (allegation) involves many quarters and it’s too early (to comment). I have to get more information first,” he told reporters after attending a leader-meets-people programme at Menara Manikavasagam here today.

China to work with Malaysia on COVID-19 vaccine development

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 1 (NNN-BERNAMA) — China will work together with Malaysia and enhance cooperation in COVID-19 vaccine development and resumption of production, said its outgoing ambassador to Malaysia Bai Tian.

He said Beijing and Kuala Lumpur will continue to fight the battle of pandemic control and economy recovery side by side, as one.

“In Malaysia, I am doing my best to carry out to the fullest our (China) leader’s views and concept on the global battle against COVID-19, which is themed solidarity and cooperation,” he said.

Sabah’s ESSZone curfew extended to Oct 17

TAWAU, Oct 1 (NNN-BERNAMA) — The curfew in the waters off seven districts in the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (ESSZone), scheduled to end tomorrow, has been extended to Oct 17.

Sabah police commissioner Datuk Hazani Ghazali said the curfew was enforced in the waters off Tawau, Semporna, Kunak, Lahad Datu, Kinabatangan, Sandakan and Beluran.

“Those living in the area are prohibited from approaching or being in the waters off the seven districts between 6 pm and 6 am.

Malaysia says after FGV, another plantation firm faces U.S. import ban

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysia on Thursday said another plantation company will face an import ban by the United States after the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency blocked imports of palm oil producer FGV Holdings FGVH.KL over forced labour allegations.

“Another big firm will be banned soon,” Human Resources Minsiter Saravanan Murugan told reporters.

He declined to name the company, but said it was a large firm within the plantation sector.

Malaysia's PM secures leadership in key state after election win

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin won out in negotiations on the candidate to lead a state on Monday after a narrow win for his ruling coalition in a weekend election that has done little to dispel doubts about his hold on power.

Muhyiddin’s coalition won Saturday’s election in Sabah state in what was widely seen as a referendum on his seven-month-old administration days after opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim declared he had a “formidable” majority in parliament to oust the premier.

Malaysia to Get Official Info From Saudi Arabia on Permission to Perform Umrah

PUTRAJAYA (Malaysia),  Sept 23  (Bernama) — Malaysia will get official information regarding permission to perform the Umrah from the Saudi Arabian government, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Dr Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri.

“Any decision pertaining to the permission to perform the Umrah has to be discussed carefully with the Saudi Arabian government first,” he told reporters after opening a seminar at the Putrajaya Islamic Complex here Wednesday.
