Russia records 3,404 daily COVID cases, 30 deaths — crisis center

MOSCOW, May 2. /TASS/: Russia’s COVID-19 case tally rose by 3,404 over the past day to 22,858,855, the anti-coronavirus crisis center reported on Tuesday.

A day earlier, 4,242 daily cases were recorded.

As many as 328 people were hospitalized with COVID-19 in Russia over the past day, down 9.9% from a day earlier. The number of hospitalized patients increased in 22 regions, while in 35 regions the figure decreased. The situation remained unchanged in 28 regions. A day earlier, 364 people were rushed to hospitals.

German makers of Leopard 2 tank settle legal dispute

DUESSELDORF, May 2 (Reuters) - German arms makers Rheinmetall (RHMG.DE) and Krauss-Maffei Wegmann have settled a legal dispute over the intellectual property rights to the Leopard 2, one of the world's most advanced battle tanks, a court said on Tuesday.

A boom in defence orders due to the war in Ukraine, and in particular demand for Leopard tanks from Kyiv to help in the fight against Russian forces, has boosted both companies.

Duesseldorf-based Rheinmetall makes the cannon of the Leopard 2 and Munich-based KMW makes its chassis.

Ukrainian farmer comes up with novel way to demine his fields

HRAKOVE, Ukraine, May 2 (Reuters) - A Ukrainian farmer has come up with a novel way to remove mines left in his fields after Russia's invasion -- he's kitted out his tractor with protective panels stripped from Russian tanks and operates it by remote control.

After Russian forces were driven back from parts of eastern Ukraine by a Ukrainian counteroffensive last year, mines remained in many fields, making it perilous for farmers to sow grain for the next harvest.

Ukraine-Russia "all-for-all" prisoner exchange set to take place in several stages

KIEV, May 1 (Xinhua) -- The projected "all-for-all" prisoner exchange between Ukraine and Russia will take place in several stages, Ukraine's Coordinating Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War said Monday.

"If we manage to agree on an 'all-for-all' exchange, it will obviously be carried out in several stages," the agency said in a statement.

The release of all captives held by the parties involves certain risks so all the steps to implement the swap deal will be "prudent and well-considered," it said.

Germany: Campaigners call for fossil fuel deadline, more climate aid

BERLIN (AP) — Environmental campaigners urged climate envoys from dozens of nations gathering Tuesday in Berlin to discuss a global deadline for phasing out fossil fuels and ways of increasing aid to poor countries hit by global warming.

About 40 countries, including the United States, China, India and Brazil, are attending the Petersberg Climate Dialogue being held in the German capital. The two-day meeting is a key negotiating step in the run-up to this year’s international climate conference in Dubai, known as COP28.

Russia missile attack on Ukraine injures 34, damages homes

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia launched its second large salvo of missiles at Ukraine in recent days early Monday, damaging buildings, killing two people and wounding 40 in the eastern city of Pavlohrad but failing to hit Kyiv, officials said.

Air raid sirens began blaring across the capital about 3:45 a.m., followed by explosions as Ukrainian defense systems intercepted missiles.

Eighteen cruise missiles were fired from the Murmansk and Caspian regions, and 15 of them were intercepted, said Ukrainian Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Valerii Zaluzhnyi.

Russia registers 4,242 coronavirus cases in 24 hours, 31 related deaths

MOSCOW, May 1. /TASS/: The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Russia grew by 4,242 in the past 24 hours, whereas the number of coronavirus-related deaths rose by 31, the federal anti-coronavirus crisis center reported on Monday.

On the previous day 5,341 coronavirus cases and 34 related deaths were registered in the country, while figures since the beginning of the pandemic reached 22,855,451 and 398,336, respectively. The number of recoveries increased by 4,681 in 24 hours compared with 5,725 on the previous day, bringing the total number of recoveries to 22,254,575.

Ukraine: Black Sea Fleet, air defenses repel attack in Sevastopol, one drone downed — governor

SEVASTOPOL, May 1. /TASS/: The Black Sea Fleet jointly with air defenses is repelling an attack of unmanned aerial vehicles in the outer harbor in Crimea’s Sevastopol, the city governor, Mikhail Razvozhayev, wrote on his Telegram channel, noting that one drone has been downed.

"The Fleet’s forces jointly with air defenses is now repelling an attack of the enemy’s drones in the outer harbor. One drone has been already downed. The city’s services are on standby. We are keeping calm," he wrote on Monday.
