Ghannouchi says Tunisian revolution needs help

23 Feb 2021; MEMO: The Speaker of Parliament and leader of the Ennahda movement has said that Tunisia needs help from its international partners. "Especially those who believe in democracy, as it is unable to implement all the reforms on its own," Rached Ghannouchi wrote in USA Today. "Tunisia," he added, "is still a democracy in the making."

Iraq FM calls to restore Syria's membership to the Arab League

24 Feb 2021; MEMO: Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein has called for Syria's membership to the Arab League to be restored, saying it would achieve the principle of integration in Arab work and coordination, Russia Today reported.

The Iraqi minister made the remarks during a meeting with Gulf officials, during which he also praised "the tripartite mechanism" between Iraq, Jordan and Egypt.

Israel: New Hope party rejects two-state solution

24 Feb 2021; MEMO: The leader of Israel's New Hope party, Gideon Sa'ar, yesterday said that he opposed the US-brokered two-state solution.

Makan reported him adding, however, that "there is no problem in forming a government with the support of the Joint List [Israeli parties]," in reference to the Arab majority Israeli political bloc.

Israel, Egypt agree to build new gas pipeline

JERUSALEM, Feb 22 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Israel and Egypt’s energy ministers agreed to build a gas pipeline from the offshore eastern Mediterranean Leviathan field to Egypt, aimed at boosting exports to Europe, an Israeli source said.

Yuval Steinitz and his Egyptian counterpart Tarek El Molla “agreed on the construction of offshore gas pipeline from the Leviathan gas field to the liquefaction facilities in Egypt,” the official said, asking not to be named.

Egypt, U.S. Discuss Military, Security, Anti-Terror Cooperation

CAIRO, Feb 23 (NNN-MENA) – Egyptian President, Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi, and visiting Commander of U.S. Central Command, Kenneth McKenzie, discussed yesterday, ways to strengthen cooperation in the military, security and anti-terrorism fields.

During a meeting in Cairo, Sisi and McKenzie also discussed joint military training programmes and the exchange of experience, presidential spokesman, Bassam Rady, said, in a statement.

Iran says it hopes South Korea, Japan will release $1 billion in blocked funds

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran expressed hope on Tuesday that South Korea and Japan would agree to release about $1 billion of Iranian funds frozen in the two countries because of U.S. sanctions, but South Korea said it still needed to discuss the matter with the United States.

Iranian government spokesman Ali Rabiei said central bank governor Abdolnaser Hemmati had reached preliminary agreements with the ambassadors of Japan and South Korea on the fund releases.

Lebanon's cash for power generation may run out at the end of March, says minister

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Lebanon’s energy ministry cannot pay for fuel to generate electricity beyond March unless more financing is approved, the caretaker energy minister said on Tuesday.

Lebanon, which is grappling with a deep financial crisis triggered by a mountain of debt, already lacks power generation capacity, so homes and businesses face power cuts for several hours each day, forcing many to turn to private generators.

“We are headed towards a difficult situation, if there is no fuel there will be no electricity,” Raymond Ghajar told Reuters.

Turkey says Greek jets harass research vessel over Aegean Sea

ANKARA/ATHENS (Reuters) - Turkey said on Tuesday that four Greek jets harassed a Turkish research vessel in the Aegean Sea but Athens denied the accusation, which comes as the two NATO members seek to resume talks over maritime disputes.

The Cesme research vessel started survey work last week in international waters between the two countries, prompting Greece to protest.

The Turkish defence ministry said the four Greek F-16s approached the Cesme on Monday and one dropped a chaff flare two nautical miles from the vessel.

UN agency project boosts business opportunities for Turks, Syrian refugees

ISTANBUL, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) is boosting business opportunities for Turkish citizens and Syrian refugees in Turkey, a UNDP representative said on Tuesday.

Faik Uyanik, head of communications for UNDP Turkey refers to a project supported by the European Union and implemented by the UNDP and the Turkish Industry and Technology Ministry that aims to grow the local economy through building industrial and innovation clusters.
