United Arab Emirates publishes first photo from Mars probe

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The United Arab Emirates on Sunday published the first image for its Mars probe now circling the red planet.

The picture, taken Wednesday, shows sunlight just coming across the surface of Mars. It shows Mars’ north pole, as well as Mars’ largest volcano, Olympus Mons.

The image comes from its “Amal,” or “Hope,” space probe.

The probe swung into orbit around Mars on Tuesday in a triumph for the Arab world’s first interplanetary mission.

Algerian MPs quit international conference over Israel

13 Feb 2021; MEMO: An Algerian parliamentary delegation has withdrawn from an international conference, citing the participation of an Israeli representative, Anadolu Agency reports.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency on Saturday, Ammar Moussa, one of three lawmakers representing Algeria in the meeting, said a teleconference meeting was organized by the International Parliamentary Network on Tuesday and Wednesday between representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean.

Sailors kidnapped off Nigeria return to Turkey, describe death threats and forest captivity

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Fifteen Turkish sailors kidnapped by pirates last month in the Gulf of Guinea arrived back in Turkey on Sunday and the ship’s captain described how they faced death threats and were held in a forest during their three-week ordeal.

The sailors hugged relatives as they arrived before dawn at Istanbul Airport, where they were greeted by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu and other officials, two days after news of their release in Nigeria emerged.

Iranian president warns of another wave of COVID-19

TEHRAN, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- Iran's President Hassan Rouhani called on Saturday for stricter COVID-19 border controls, noting another wave of the COVID-19 pandemic may be on the way in the country.

"More attention must be paid to foreign entries, especially from countries infected with new variants of the virus," he said in a meeting of the national anti-COVID-19 headquarters in Tehran, official news agency IRNA reported.
