Russia deploys military reinforcements to northeastern Syria

19 Jan 2021; MEMO: Head of the Russia-Syria Joint Monitoring Centre Dmitry Suntsov announced on Monday the deployment of additional Russian military units to northeastern Syria.

Suntsov confirmed that an additional Russian military police unit had been deployed to the city of Hasaka in northeastern Syria to strengthen the joint observation posts with the Syrian regime forces, and to contribute to calming the conflict in the region.

Israel to ban human rights groups from school visits

18 Jan 2021; MEMO: Israel's education minister is banning groups that call the country an "apartheid state" from making schools visits to present information to students, CBS News has reported. Yoav Galant tweeted yesterday that he had instructed the ministry's director general to "prevent the entry of organisations calling Israel 'an apartheid state' or demeaning Israeli soldiers from lecturing at schools."

Germany provides UNDP with 400,000 euros to support elections in Libya

TRIPOLI, Jan 19 (NNN-Xinhua) — German Ambassador to Libya Oliver Owcza announced providing 400,000 euros for the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) to support the High National Elections Commission of Libya.

“Honored to sign a German 400,000 Euros contribution to UNDP Libya in support of LyHNEC (Libyan High National Elections Commission),” Owcza tweeted.

“Legal and organizational preparations should start now to support the electoral roadmap as agreed on by the LPDF (Libyan Political Dialogue Forum),” the ambassador said.

Turkey orders 238 detained in military probe over Gulen links: Anadolu

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkey has ordered the arrest of 238 people in an operation targeting suspects in the military allegedly linked to a Muslim preacher who Ankara says was behind a 2016 failed coup, state-owned Anadolu news agency reported on Tuesday.

The operation, covering 60 provinces, was part of a four-year-old crackdown against the network of U.S.-based cleric Fethullah Gulen. He denies involvement in the July 2016 putsch attempt, in which more than 250 people were killed.

Egyptian defense minister, Greek chief of staff discuss military ties

CAIRO, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian Defense Minister Mohamed Zaki and the Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff Konstantinos Floros discussed on Monday strengthening military cooperation between Cairo and Athens.

German, Turkish ministers discuss better EU-Turkish ties as tensions ease in East Med

Oman to close land borders again to curb coronavirus

18 Jan 2021; MEMO: Oman will close its land borders for one week from Monday to curb the spread of the coronavirus, especially a more contagious variant, state news agency ONA said on Sunday, Reuters reports.

The measure will come into effect from 6 p.m. (1400 GMT) on Monday and can be extended for longer than the initial one week closure, ONA said, citing a decision by the Gulf state's coronavirus emergency committee.
