Israel OKs hundreds of settlement homes in last-minute push

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli authorities on Sunday advanced plans to build nearly 800 homes in West Bank settlements, in a last-minute surge of approvals before the friendly Trump administration leaves office later this week.

COGAT, the Israeli defense body that authorizes settlement construction, confirmed the approvals, which drew swift condemnations from the Palestinians.

Death toll from violence in Sudan’s West Darfur rises to 83

CAIRO (AP) — The death toll from tribal violence between Arabs and non-Arabs in Sudan’s West Darfur province climbed to at least 83, including women and children, a doctor’s union and aid worker said, as sporadic violence continued Sunday.

The ruling sovereign council met Sunday and said security forces would be deployed to the area.

Russian diplomat heading for Turkey’s Bartin to help Russian nationals

Four die as dry cargo ship sinks in Black Sea off Turkey

ANKARA, January 17. /TASS/: At least four crewmembers of the bulk carrier that sank on Sunday in the Black Sea off the Turkish coast have died, the local authorities reported.

"The vessel sank because of the bad weather conditions. Four people died. Six crewmembers have been saved. The search and rescue operation at sea has been suspended because of high waves, with only helicopters continuing the search," Bartin Province Governor Sinan Guner told NTV.

The vessel sank near Turkey’s Inkumu, Bartin Province. According Guner, six crewmembers have been saved.

Pres Abbas announces long-awaited Palestinian elections

RAMALLAH, Jan 17 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas announced dates for the first Palestinian elections in more than 15 years, setting legislative polls for May 22 and a July 31 presidential vote.

Abbas’s Fatah party, which controls the Palestinian Authority based in the occupied West Bank, and the Hamas Islamists, who hold power in Gaza, have for years expressed interest in taking Palestinians back to the polls.

A long-standing rivalry between the two main Palestinian factions was seen as a leading factor in stalling progress towards a new vote.

Lebanon: Beirut blast chemicals possibly linked to Syrian businessmen - report, company filings

BEIRUT/LONDON/MOSCOW (Reuters) - The company that bought the ammonium nitrate which exploded in Beirut last August had possible links to two Syrian businessmen under U.S. sanctions for ties to President Bashar al-Assad, according to a report by a Lebanese journalist and London company filings.

Savaro Ltd, the trading firm which procured the chemicals in 2013, shared a London address with companies linked to George Haswani and Imad Khoury, according to the report by documentary film-maker Firas Hatoum, which aired on Lebanon’s al-Jadeed TV station this week.

Iran warns Washington to stop "illegal actions" against diplomats on U.S. soil

TEHRAN, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Iran has warned the United States to stop "illegal actions" taken against its diplomats on U.S. soil, the spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Affairs Ministry Saeed Khatibzadeh declared on Saturday.

"Iran has officially warned the U.S. that it will sue it before the International Court of Justice if it does not stop its illegal actions against Iranian diplomats in international organizations," Khatibzadeh said, as quoted by news agency IRNA.

Iran to provide COVID-19 vaccines in March; over 675,000 health workers in Turkey receive Chinese vaccine

CAIRO, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Iranian President Hassan Rouhani Saturday said the country will start vaccination in March. Meanwhile, more than 675,000 health workers in Turkey have received COVID-19 vaccine developed by China's Sinovac.

Addressing a national committee meeting on fighting COVID-19, Rouhani said Iran will begin mass vaccination by the end of the current Iranian calendar year (March 20, 2021).
