Algeria court sentences Bouteflika's alleged daughter to 12 years in prison

01 Jan 2021; MEMO: An appeal court in Algeria on Thursday sentenced the alleged daughter of ousted President Abdelaziz Bouteflika to 12 years in prison after she was convicted in corruption cases.

The Appeal Court of Tipaza fined Zoulikha Nachinache, known as Maya, six million Algerian dinars, and ruled to confiscate all of her real estate.

Israeli PM, UN Mideast envoy meet over regional issues

JERUSALEM, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and UN Middle East Envoy Nickolay Mladenov met on Thursday at the prime minister's residence in Jerusalem.

Netanyahu thanked Mladenov for "the positive role he filled vis-a-vis various elements in the region," said a statement issued by the prime minister's office.

He underlined the continued UN assistance in negotiations for the return of the Israeli fallen soldiers and civilians, whose bodies, according to Israel, are being held by Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

China, Egypt sign letter of intent for COVID-19 vaccine cooperation

CAIRO, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- China and Egypt signed on Thursday a letter of intent for mutual cooperation on COVID-19 vaccines.

Chinese Ambassador to Egypt Liao Liqiang signed the letter, on behalf of the National Health Commission of China, with Mohamed Hassani, Egyptian assistant minister of health for public health initiatives, said the Chinese embassy in Cairo in a statement.

The signing ceremony was also attended by Egyptian Health Minister Hala Zayed, the statement said.

Israel’s virus surveillance tool tests its democratic norms

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — In the early days of the pandemic, a panicked Israel began using a mass surveillance tool on its civilians, tracking people’s cellphones in hopes of stopping the spread of the coronavirus.

The government touted the technology, normally used to catch wanted Palestinian militants, as a breakthrough against the virus. But months later, the tool’s effectiveness is being called into question and critics say its use has come at an immeasurable cost to the country’s democratic principles.

Turkish defense minister holds meeting with Turkish officers in Baku

ANKARA, December 31. /TASS/: Minister of National Defense of Turkey Hulusi Akar had a meeting with Turkish officers in Baku, who will serve in the ceasefire control center in Nagorno-Karabakh operating jointly with Russia, Anadolu Agency reported Thursday.

"Our military are ready to carry out their duties. After the joint center starts its work, out activities will be reinforced, and we will fulfil our mission to protect rights of our Azerbaijani brothers," Akar said at the meeting in the Azerbaijani capital.

Syria Urges UN To Stop Israeli Attacks

DAMASCUS, Dec 31 (NNN-SANA) – The Syrian Foreign Ministry, yesterday, urged the United Nations Security Council, to take firm and immediate measures, to stop Israeli aggression on Syria.

In a statement, the ministry said, the Israeli attacks are the result of the “unlimited” support by the United States and some UN Security Council members.

The ministry said, the Syrian government condemns the attack, that was carried out by Israel on Syrian military bases at dawn yesterday.

Iran's Zarif says U.S. plotting to fabricate war pretext - Twitter

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif accused the United States on Thursday of trying to fabricate a pretext for attacking Iran, and vowed Tehran would defend itself even though it does not seek war

Sudan's armed forces now in control of all its territory - foreign minister

KHARTOUM (Reuters) - Sudan’s armed forces have taken control of all of its territory, Foreign Minister Omar Gamareldin said in a press conference on Thursday, as border tensions with neighbour Ethiopia continue to flare.

Clashes have occurred in recent days over agricultural land in the al-Fashqa area which lies within Sudan’s international boundaries but has long been settled by Ethiopian farmers.

Saudi-led coalition strikes at Yemen capital after attacks on Aden blamed on Houthis

ADEN (Reuters) -Saudi-led coalition warplanes struck targets in Yemen’s Houthi-held capital Sanaa on Thursday in retaliation for attacks in the southern port city of Aden the previous day that took place as officials in a government backed by Riyadh arrived there.

The coalition accused the Houthi movement, which it has been fighting for six years, of staging the attack on Aden’s airport and a second one on the presidential palace.

UN: 172,000 Yemenis displaced in 2020 amid conflict

31 Dec 2020; MEMO: Some 172,000 Yemenis have been displaced during 2020 due to the years-long bloody conflict across the country, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) announced in a report yesterday.

"Since the start of 2020 until 26 December, 28,659 families, representing 171,954 Yemenis, have been displaced from their homes due to several factors, mostly the country's raging conflict," IOM said.
