Israel approves plan to seize more Palestinian land near Bethlehem

04 Jan 2021; MEMO: The Israeli occupation authorities approved a plan on Sunday to seize acres of Palestinian land near occupied Bethlehem, a local anti-settlement activist has revealed.

Hasan Brejiyeh told Wafa that the land is Palestinian-owned by and will be used for the construction and expansion of colonial settlements. The plan, he insisted, is evidence that the Israeli government is facilitating settlers' attempts to steal ever more Palestinian-owned land and property.

Israel's defence minister favours buying one more F-35 squadron for now

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel’s defence minister said on Monday that he wants the country to buy a third squadron of stealth F-35 warplanes from the United States, and that he hoped a deal could be clinched before President Donald Trump steps down on Jan. 20.

Israel has been in talks with Washington on how to preserve its military advantage after the Trump administration approved a possible F-35 sale to the United Arab Emirates last year. The plane was previously available only to Israel in the region.

Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia agree to hold more talks on Nile dam: Egyptian foreign ministry

CAIRO, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- Ministers of foreign affairs and irrigation of Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia agreed on Sunday to hold a week-long round of negotiations to discuss the substantive aspects and controversial points over the disputed Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

Agreement for the new round of talks came after the ministers from the three countries held a virtual meeting over the filling and operation of the GERD under the patronage of the African Union (AU).

Iraqi leaders call for withdrawal of foreign forces from Iraq

BAGHDAD, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- Iraqi leaders on Sunday called for the withdrawal of foreign forces from Iraq on the first anniversary of a U.S. drone strike that killed two senior commanders of Shiite militias.

During a rally of thousands of supporters of Hashd Shaabi forces at al-Tahrir Square in downtown Baghdad, Hadi al-Ameri, head of Iran-backed Badr Organization, told the demonstrators "the government must abide by its pledges to remove all foreign forces, especially the U.S. forces, according to a timetable."

Gen. Soleimani thwarted US plot to disintegrate states of region: IRGC

Kerman, Jan 3, IRNA – Iran's Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) spokesman Brigadier General Ramezan Sharif said the US seeks to plunder nations in the region and disintegrating Islamic states, adding that Lieutenant General Qasem Soleimani thwarted the US plot to disintegrate states in the region.

Speaking in a meeting to commemorate anniversary of General Soleimani's martyrdom, Shrif said that formation of a powerful Islamic force for the first time in 200 years helped Muslims fight united against a common enemy.

2,500-year-old Aphrodite temple discovered in Turkey

02 Jan 2021; AA: A team of Turkish scientists and archaeologists discovered the remains of a 2,500-year-old Aphrodite Temple in the Urla-Cesme peninsula in Turkey's west.

As a result of screening an area of 1,600 square meters that covers parts of Urla, Cesme and Seferihisar districts of Izmir, 35 pre-historic era human settlements, including 16 from the late Neolithic period, were uncovered.

Kuwait schools to resume after vaccinating 65% of population

02 Jan 2021; MEMO: Students will return to schools in Kuwait after 65 per cent of the Kuwaiti population have been vaccinated against COVID-19, Al-Qabas newspaper revealed.

The Kuwaiti daily reported that it would not be obligatory for teachers to be vaccinated. However, they were included within the recommended categories to be vaccinated.

Israel bans thousands of Palestinians from praying at Al-Aqsa Mosque

02 Jan 2021; MEMO: Israeli occupation police on Friday barred thousands of Palestinians from performing Friday prayer at Al-Aqsa Mosque, under the pretext of fighting COVID-19, Anadolu Agency reported.

Witnesses said that the Israeli police erected checkpoints at the entries of Jerusalem's Old City and prevented Palestinians from entering Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Israel dismisses 'nonsense' Iran charge it seeks to trick U.S. into war

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - An Israeli official on Sunday dismissed as “nonsense” an allegation by the Iranian foreign minister that Israel was trying to trick the United States into waging war on Iran.

It was Israel that needed to be on alert for possible Iranian strikes on the one-year anniversary on Sunday of the assassination of Tehran’s top general, Qassem Soleimani, in a U.S. drone strike in Iraq, Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz said on Kan public radio.
