Syria appoints veteran diplomat Faisal Mekdad as foreign minister

23 Nov 2020; MEMO: Syria named veteran diplomat Faisal Mekdad as foreign minister on Sunday to replace Walid Moalem, who died last week, state media reported, Reuters reports.

Mekdad, 66, had been deputy foreign minister since 2006. He has also held a string of diplomatic posts, including envoy to the United Nations.

Turkey calls on EU to 'keep promises of closer cooperation'

23 Nov 2020; MEMO: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan yesterday urged the European Union (EU) to keep its promises to establish closer cooperation.

"We call on the European Union to keep the promises made to our country from full membership to migration, so we can build a closer, more efficient cooperation," Erdogan told his ruling Justice and Development Party during a virtual meeting, Anadolu Agency reported.

Syrian president appoints new FM

DAMASCUS, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Sunday appointed Faisal Mekdad, the deputy foreign minister, as the new foreign minister, following the death of late Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem last Monday.

Assad also named Bashar al-Jaafari, the Syrian representative to the UN, as the new deputy foreign minister.

Mekdad, born in southern Syria in 1954, served as the permanent representative of Syria to the UN from 2003 to 2006. He was appointed as deputy foreign minister in 2006.

Israel approves visa exemption deal with UAE

JERUSALEM, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- Israel's cabinet ratified on Sunday a mutual visa exemption deal with the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

"We have approved a visa exemption agreement between Israel and the United Arab Emirates," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wrote on Twitter.

The deal bolsters economic ties and reciprocal tourism between the two countries, according to Netanyahu. "This is the first Arab country with which we have signed such an agreement," he said.

Yemen rebels claim attack on Saudi oil facility in Jiddah

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Yemen’s Houthi rebels said they struck a Saudi oil facility in the port city of Jiddah on Monday with a new cruise missile, just hours after the kingdom finished hosting its virtual Group of 20 leaders summit.

The kingdom did not immediately acknowledge any attack as videos on social media suggested a fire at an Aramco oil facility.

Pompeo touts Iran policy in Gulf ahead of Biden presidency

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Sunday defended his tour of Gulf Arab states and the Trump administration’s continued efforts to squeeze Iran, even as a new U.S. administration led by Joe Biden prepares to enter the White House in January.

Although Pompeo has not taken questions from U.S.-based reporters traveling with him over the past 10 days, he sat down with the Saudi-owned broadcaster Al-Arabiya in Dubai for brief televised remarks Sunday.

UAE: G-20 summit ends with support for COVID-19 vaccines for all

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Leaders of the world’s most powerful nations wrapped up the Group of 20 summit on Sunday, vowing to spare no effort to protect lives and ensure affordable access to COVID-19 vaccines for all people.

The two-day summit of heads of state was held virtually due to the coronavirus pandemic, which has killed at least 1.38 million people globally, with the world’s highest death tolls recorded in seven of the G-20 countries. The virus has wiped out hundreds of millions of jobs globally and plunged millions into extreme poverty.

Ethiopian Army Discloses Capture Of Cities In Tigray Region

ADDIS ABABA, Nov 22 (NNN-ENA) – The Ethiopian government, yesterday announced the capture of cities from Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) fighters, in different directions across the restive Tigray regional state.

“The Ethiopian National Defence Forces (ENDF), took full control of Axum, Adwa and surrounding areas of Adigrat,” the state of emergency task force, established by the federal government, to watch over ongoing military operations against the TPLF, said.
