Iraq seeks $2bn in upfront payment for crude to face financial crisis

25 Nov 2020; MEMO: Iraq asked oil importers to pay $2 billion upfront payments for crude supplies as part of long-term contracts, as a result of its suffocating financial crisis.

Bloomberg reported that Iraq is undergoing a severe financial crisis following the fall in global oil prices, adding that authorities were forced to cut production under an agreement with the OPEC+ group to sustain global oil prices.

Israel: Gantz mulls pushing bill to dissolve Knesset

25 Nov 2020; MEMO: Benny Gantz has told heads of branches of his Blue and White party that Israel is heading for elections, public broadcaster Kan reported yesterday.

Haaretz also reported Eitan Ginzburg, chairman of the Knesset bloc of Gantz's party, saying that they are putting forward a bill to dissolve the Knesset because of disagreements with coalition partner Likud.

Israel ready for settlement with Hamas: Gantz

25 Nov 2020; MEMO: Israeli Defence Minister Benny Gantz announced that the occupation state is willing to reach a settlement with Hamas and improve conditions for the residents of the Gaza Strip.

In a tweet Gantz wrote: "I met this evening with the UN envoy Mladenov, and thanked him for his contribution to the resumption of security and civilian coordination with the Palestinians."

Syria claims Israeli attack on post south of capital

Damascus, Nov 25 (AP-PTI) Syria's military said suspected Israeli warplanes struck locations south of the capital Damascus late Tuesday, causing only material damage, state-run media reported.

The report, which quotes an unidentified military official, said the warplanes struck shortly before midnight south of Damascus, from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. The statement didn't elaborate on the target or the damage.

Arab authors boycott UAE book awards due to ties with Israel

23 Nov 2020; MEMO: A number of Arab authors are boycotting the International Prize for Arabic Fiction (IPAF) and the Sheikh Zayed Book Award, funded by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in protest against Abu Dhabi's decision to normalise ties with Israel. Seventeen former IPAF winners, jury members and shortlisted authors appealed to the trustees of the event demanding a halt to Emirati funding of the prize to "maintain its independence."

Morocco: Former minister announces new phase in Western Sahara conflict

24 Nov 2020; MEMO: A former spokesman for the Moroccan government, Mustapha El-Khalfi, has said that there is a "new phase" in the Western Sahara issue, after recent tension in the region. "Morocco will not stand idly by while the separatists are trying to alter the Moroccan Western Sahara Wall," he insisted, referring to a buffer zone on the border of the region in which the UN forces are deployed.

Sudan: Formation of transitional parliament to be postponed

24 Nov 2020; MEMO: The Forces of Freedom and Change Alliance (FFC) announced the postponement of the formation of the transitional parliament to the end of the year.

The agreement signed between the FFC and the military in August 2019 stipulated that the Legislative Council  will be formed within three months. It was to be made up of 300 members, 40 per cent of whom would be women.

Ethiopia's Tigray forces claim battle win, global alarm grows

ADDIS ABABA/NAIROBI (Reuters) - Tigrayan forces said on Tuesday they had destroyed an Ethiopian army division in battles to control the northern region where a three-week-old war has killed hundreds and spread global alarm.

The federal government denied that and said many Tigrayan soldiers were surrendering in line with a 72-hour ultimatum before a threatened attack on the regional capital Mekelle.

Israel, Lebanon talks on maritime borders stall

24 Nov 2020; MEMO: US-brokered Israeli-Lebanese talks on the countries 'maritime borders have reached a dead end due to conflicting positions, Israel Hayom reported yesterday.

On Sunday, following the fallout of the talks, Israeli Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz and Lebanese President Michel Aoun traded barbs, the paper said.
