Palestinian president Abbas meets World Jewish Congress head

11 Oct 2020; MEMO: Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas met with World Jewish Congress President Ronald Lauder in the West Bank on Saturday, a Palestinian minister said, following a call by Lauder for Palestinians to revive peace talks with Israel, Reuters reports.

Civil Affairs Minister Hussein al-Sheikh revealed the meeting in a Twitter posting but gave no details.

Israel will oppose any US F-35 sale to Qatar

11 Oct 2020; MEMO: Israel will oppose any US sale of F-35 warplanes to Qatar, Israel’s intelligence minister said on Sunday, citing a need to maintain Israeli military superiority in the region, Reuters reports.

Intelligence Minister Eli Cohen made the comments on Israeli Army Radio when asked about a Reuters report that Qatar had submitted a formal request to Washington to buy stealthy F-35 fighter jets.

Palestinian Authority Denies Request For Mediation To Resolve Tax Dues Crisis With Israel

RAMALLAH, Oct 10 (NNN-WAFA) – A Palestinian minister, said that, the Palestinian Authority did not ask for mediation, to resolve its tax dues crisis with Israel.

“There is no mediation between the Palestinian Authority and Israel, regarding the tax dues, and we did not ask for anyone’s intervention,” said Minister of Civil Affairs, Hussein al-Sheikh.

Al-Sheikh’s statement came, in response to a Saudi Arabian newspaper report, that quoted a Palestinian source as saying, the Palestinians had asked Qatar to mediate in the crisis.

Iraqi Gov’t Announces Historic Agreement With Kurdish Region Over Disputed Sinjar

BAGHDAD, Oct 10 (NNN-NINA) – The Iraqi government struck a historic agreement with the government of the semi-autonomous region of Kurdistan, over the status of the predominantly Yazidi city of Sinjar, in the north province of Nineveh, according to a government statement.

The agreement to restore stability and normalise the situation in Sinjar came during a meeting held by Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi with officials from the federal government and from Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), said a statement by the Prime Minister’s office.

Iran's rial hits new low against dollar as economy reels

10 Oct 2020; MEMO: The Iranian rial fell to a new low against the US dollar on Saturday as the economy reels under pressure from the COVID-19 pandemic and US sanctions.

The dollar was selling for as much as 304,300 rials on the unofficial market, up from 295,940 on Friday, according to the foreign exchange site Bonbast.com.

The economic daily Donya-e-Eqtesad’s website gave the dollar rate as 303,300, up 6,000 rials from Friday.

Iran officials strike defiant note to new US sanctions

10 Oct 2020; MEMO: Downplaying the impact of new US sanctions on Iranian banks, Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani on Friday said the move is a “political propaganda” to appease domestic audience in the US, Anadolu reports.

Speaking to the head of Iran’s Central Bank, Rouhani struck a defiant tone, saying the new US sanctions targeting Iranian financial institutions “cannot break the resistance of Iranians”.

Yemen’s Houthi group bans WhatsApp

10 Oct 2020; MEMO: The Houthis have banned and criminalised the use of WhatsApp in the southwestern Ibb governorate, which is under the movement’s control.

This came according to a communiqué issued on Thursday evening by the prosecutor of Jiblah District in Ibb, one of the most densely populated Yemeni governorates.

The statement announced that “anyone who uses the WhatsApp application will be arrested” and using the application will be considered “an indecent assault”.

Kuwait’s parliament approves Sheikh Mishaal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah as crown prince

KUWAIT CITY, Oct 9 (NNN-AGENCIES) – Kuwaiti National Assembly (parliament) approved Sheikh Mishaal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah as crown prince, Kuwait News Agency said.

Sheikh Mishaal, 80, has been deputy chief of the Kuwait National Guard since 2004, largely staying out of the political scene and away from disputes within the royal family. 

The Sabah ruling family “blessed” 83-year-old Sheikh Nawaf’s decision, the official Kuwait News Agency said Wednesday, a day ahead of a parliamentary session to approve the choice. 

Arab League crisis continues as 6th member refuses to take up presidency

CAIRO, Oct 9 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The Arab League was targeted by growing criticism on Arab social media after six countries refused to chair the rotating presidency of the organization.

On Tuesday, Libya declined to take the presidency after Palestine relinquished its right to preside. Libya joined Qatar, the Comoros, Kuwait and Lebanon in refusing the chair.

So far, no statement has been issued by the Arab League about the dilemma.
