Turkish, Greek FMs agree to set dates for new round of talks

ANKARA, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said he met with his Greek counterpart Nikos Dendias on Thursday and they agreed to set dates for the start of a new round of exploratory talks of confidence-building between Ankara and Athens.

"We will determine dates of Exploratory Talks and meetings for Confidence Building Measures in the coming days," he tweeted after a brief meeting with Greek minister, which was the first after months of tension in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict draws in fighters from Mideast

BEIRUT (AP) — For the past two weeks, Raffi Ghazarian has been glued to the TV at home and at work watching news about the fighting between Armenian and Azerbaijani forces. If it goes on, the 50-year-old Lebanese of Armenian descent says he’s ready to leave everything and volunteer to defend his ancestral land.

Some from Lebanon’s large ethnic Armenian population have already travelled to join the fight, according to members of the community, although they say the numbers are small.

Sudan’s Main Port Resumes Operation After Closure By Protesters

KHARTOUM, Oct 8 (NNN-SUNA) – Local authorities in eastern Sudan’s Red Sea State, on Wednesday announced, the resumption of work at the major port, after two days of closure by protesters.

“The Sea Ports Corporation resumed work at Port-Sudan’s southern harbour today (yesterday),” said Abdullah Shangarai, Red Sae State Governor, in a statement.

Libya becomes 6th nation to refuse to chair Arab League

In an official statement by Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Mohammed Al-Qiblawi, the Libyan representative to the AL, Saleh Al-Shammakhi, apologised on behalf of his government to the league’s general secretariat.

Saudi judge faces bribery and corruption charges

07 Oct 2020; MEMO: A senior judge in Saudi Arabia is facing bribery and corruption charges, the local media revealed on Tuesday.

Although he is said to have been caught “red-handed” with around 250,000 Riyals in his possession, the identity of the judge is being kept secret. He denies the charges and claims that he is the victim of a “conspiracy”.

France could support other than two-state solution

07 Oct 2020; MEMO: The French Ambassador to Israel, Eric Danon, has said that his country might update its position regarding the two-state solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Al-Quds Al-Araby reported on Wednesday. Danon apparently made his comments during a discussion initiated by Allent, a pro-Israel lobby group in Europe.

Iran: Azerbaijan-Armenia conflict could turn into regional war

07 Oct 2020; MEMO: Iranian President Hassan Rouhani yesterday warned that the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia could become a regional war.

“We must be attentive that the war between Armenia and Azerbaijan does not become a regional war. Peace is the basis of our work and we hope to restore stability to the region in a peaceful way,” Rouhani said in a televised address, adding that the parties to the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh must recognise peoples’ rights and respect territorial integrity.

Jordan moves schools online as coronavirus cases rise

07 Oct 2020; MEMO: Classes in schools will be suspended in Jordan from tomorrow “until further notice”, the education minister announced yesterday.

“Exams for secondary school students will, however, be held on time, with the exact dates for the tests to be announced sometime next week,” Tayseer Al-Nuaimi was quoted as saying by the official Petra news agency.

North Cyprus reopens part of resort abandoned in 1974 conflict

NICOSIA (Reuters) - Northern Cyprus reopened part of the beachfront of a resort abandoned since Turkey invaded the island in 1974, witnesses said on Thursday, taking a step supported by Ankara but condemned by Greek Cypriots and causing concern internationally.

People wearing face masks streamed in after being allowed through a checkpoint by police near the beachfront of Varosha, a deserted suburb of Famagusta city in the breakaway Northern Cyprus state in the east of the divided Mediterranean island.
