Libya: TV footage of ovens used by Haftar to torture oppositionists

09 July 2020; MEMO: Libya Febrayer TV yesterday aired a video showing detention facilities, which it described as “human ovens”, where oppositionists were tortured by renegade General Khalifa Haftar’s forces.

The video showed very narrow cells located in the city of Tarhuna, south-east of the capital, Tripoli, with steel doors.

Turkey announces naval drills off Libya coast

09 July 2020; MEMO: The Turkish Ministry of National Defence has announced that large-scale naval exercises off the Libyan coast will take place soon.

According to the official statement, the expected manoeuvres will be called “Naftex”, adding that the maritime exercises will take place off the Libyan coast in three different regions: Barbaros, Turgutreis and Chaka Bey.

Israel threatening Christian presence in the city: Jerusalem church leaders

09 July 2020; MEMO: As many as 13 church leaders in the occupied city of Jerusalem yesterday warned that the Israeli court’s decision concerning the Greek Orthodox Church’s property at Jaffa Gate threatens the Christian presence in the holy city, Anadolu reported.

Iran, Syria sign agreement to expand "comprehensive" military cooperation

TEHRAN, July 8 (Xinhua) -- Iran and Syria signed an agreement on Wednesday to expand "comprehensive" military and security cooperation, the semi-official Fars news agency reported.

The agreement was signed between Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Mohammad Baqeri and Syrian Defense Minister Ali Abdullah Ayyoub in the Syrian capital Damascus.

As part of the agreement, Iran "will strengthen Syria's air defense system," Baqeri was quoted as saying.

Palestine Welcomes UNESCO Resolutions To Protect Palestinian Heritage Sites

RAMALLAH, July 8 (NNN-WAFA) – Palestine hailed the latest resolutions of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), that call for the protection of Palestinian heritage sites from Israeli moves.

Member of the Palestine Liberation Organisation, Hanan Ashrawi said, the decision is important at a time of “increasing Israeli actions against Palestinian heritage sites,” specifically within its annexation plan that is likely to take over historical and archaeological sites in the West Bank.

Iran denies Israel cyberattack caused fire in nuclear facility

08 July 2020; MEMO: Spokesman of Iran’s Power Industry, Mostafa Rajabi Mashhadi, has denied reports that an Israeli cyberattack caused a fire in Iran’s nuclear facilityArabi21 reported yesterday.

“The reports about cyberattacks on energy stations in the country are false,” Mashhadi told a local Iranian news agency according to Arabi21.

Yemen official: We ask the UAE to take its hands off our oil, gas and ports

08 July 2020; MEMO: Governor of Yemen’s Al Mahwit region, Saleh Sami, called on UAE Crown Prince, Mohammed Bin Zayed, to lift his hands off Yemen’s oil, gas and ports.

On Twitter, Sami wrote: “Oh, [Saudi-led] coalition, we do not want you to arm our army or maintain our security. We only ask [Mohammed] Bin Zayed to take his hands off our ports and stop preventing the export of our gas and oil through them.”

Saudi Arabia denies reports it froze expats’ bank accounts

08 July 2020; MEMO: Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency (SAMA) yesterday denied reports that banks intended to freeze the accounts of expatriate workers whose financial transactions exceed their wages.

“There is no truth in the reports that have been circulated across some media networks that the kingdom’s banks were directed to freeze accounts of expatriate workers whose transactions had exceeded the prevalent wages of their jobs,” SAMA said on Twitter.
