Israel In “Emergency Situation” Over COVID-19 Resurgence: PM

JERUSALEM, July 6 (NNN-MA’AN) – Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, said on Sunday that, Israel is “in an emergency situation” over a rapid resurgence of the COVID-19 across the country.

“This outbreak will see an increase and a doubling of the number of severe cases,” he told his weekly cabinet meeting in Jerusalem, adding, the surge “poses a challenge for Israel and our health system.”

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran’s hardline lawmakers plan to summon the president for questioning, a move that could ultimately lead to impeachment, media reported on Monday, amid growing discontent over the government’s economic policies.

Iranians’ daily struggle to make ends meet has become harder since the reimposition of U.S. sanctions in 2018, and the economy has been further damaged by rising inflation, growing unemployment, a slump in the rial and the coronavirus crisis.

Hundreds protest against increased power cuts in Lebanon

BEIRUT, July 5 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds protested on Sunday near Lebanon's state power utility Electricite Du Liban (EDL) against increased power cuts in the country, a local media outlet reported.

Protesters highlighted the increased corruption and money squandering at EDL, vowing escalatory measures as peaceful demonstrations are not reaping positive results, said Elnashra, an online independent newspaper.

Iran's top leader vows support for Palestinian cause

TEHRAN, July 6 (Xinhua) -- Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Monday that the Islamic republic will spares no efforts to support the Palestinian cause, official IRNA news agency reported.

"The Palestinian resistance has been able to thwart the U.S. and Israeli plots," Khamenei wrote in response to a letter of Ismail Haniyeh, politburo chief of Hamas movement.

Israel announces successful launch of new spy satellite

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel’s Defense Ministry announced the successful launch of a new spy satellite early on Monday.

It said the “Ofek 16” reconnaissance satellite was launched at 4 a.m. from central Israel into space. It described the Ofek as an “electro-optical reconnaissance satellite with advanced capabilities.”

Shortly after the launch, it said the Ofek already was transmitting data and beginning to orbit around the Earth. It said engineers from the ministry and state-owned Israel Aerospace Industries were conducting tests before it begins full operational activities.

Iran confirms damaged nuclear site was centrifuge facility

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran on Sunday confirmed that a damaged building at the underground Natanz nuclear site was a new centrifuge assembly center, the official IRNA news agency reported.

Iranian officials had previously sought to downplay the fire, which erupted early on Thursday, calling it only an “incident” that affected an “industrial shed.” However, a released photo and video of the site broadcast by Iranian state television showed a two-story brick building with scorch marks and its roof apparently destroyed.

Iran’s COVID-19 Cases Nudge 240,000; Saudi Arabia Records Second Most Cases In Mideast

CAIRO, July 5 (NNN-MENA) – The total number of COVID-19 cases approached 240,000 in Iran on Saturday. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia surpassed Turkey in the tally of infections with nearly 206,000 confirmed cases.

Iran, the hardest-hit country by the COVID-19 pandemic in the Middle East, reported 2,449 new cases, bringing the total of infections to 237,878.

The country also reported 148 new deaths from the virus, raising the death toll to 11,408. A total of 198,949 patients have recovered, with 3,136 still in critical condition.

Rocket fired towards Baghdad Green Zone, child injured - military, police source

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A rocket fired towards Baghdad’s Green Zone, which hosts the U.S. and other embassies, fell just short causing damage to a home and injuring a child early on Sunday, the Iraqi military said.

Security forces at the same time stopped another Katyusha rocket from being launched at Taji military air base north of Baghdad which hosts U.S. troops, a military statement added.

Israel says 'not necessarily' behind all Iran nuclear site incidents

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel’s defence minister said on Sunday it is not “necessarily” behind every mysterious incident in Iran, after a fire at the Natanz nuclear site prompted some Iranian officials to say it was the result of cyber sabotage.

Israel, widely believed to be the region’s only nuclear power, has pledged never to allow Iran to obtain atomic weapons, saying Tehran advocates its destruction. Iran denies ever seeking nuclear arms and says its atomic programme is peaceful.
