Egypt arrests journalist Shaima Sami

21 May 2020; MEMO: Egyptian security forces have arrested a journalist and former researcher for the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information.

Shaima Sami wrote on Facebook that she was being arrested from her home in Alexandria, just minutes before her personal account was closed.

Security forces told her family they were taking her to the Alexandria Security Directorate. Shaima’s family and the UNHCR have demanded her release.

Israeli Court Orders Netanyahu To Attend Trial’s Opening

JERUSALEM, May 21 (NNN-WAFA) – The Israeli court, on Wednesday, ordered Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, to appear at the first court session of his upcoming corruption trial.

The Jerusalem District Court rejected a request filed by Netanyahu’s lawyers on Tuesday, to exempt him from appearing for the hearing.

The lawyers argued that Netanyahu’s presence was unnecessary because he had “read this indictment several times already,” and the five bodyguards needed to secure his arrival would cost the public coffers “a fortune.”

UAE, Iranian Health Ministers Review COVID-19 Countermeasures

ABU DHABI, May, 21 (NNN-WAM) – Abdul Rahman bin Mohammad bin Nasser Al Owais, Minister of Health and Prevention, received a phone call from Iranian Health Minister, Saeed Namaki, wherein they exchanged views over the measures taken by the two countries in the fight against COVID-19.

Al Owais said, the UAE recently developed a rapid coronavirus laser testing technology, that enables mass-scale screening with results made available in seconds.

Iraqi security services say captured possible ISIS leader successor - TV

CAIRO, May 20. TASS/: Iraqi special security services have announced Wednesday that the possible successor of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, former leader of ISIS neutralized by the US, was captured by them, Iraq’s Alsumaria TV reported.

"Today, terrorist Abdullah Qardash, who was a contender to succeed criminal al-Baghdadi, was arrested," the channel quoted the Iraqi intelligence statement. "The arrest was carried put based on verified information.".

Venezuela says Iranian tankers will get military escort

21 May 2020; AFP: Venezuela on Wednesday said its navy and air force would escort Iranian tankers arriving with much needed fuel, after Tehran warned of "consequences" if the US stopped the ships from reaching their destination.

"We're ready for whatever, whenever," President Nicolas Maduro told state-run media, thanking "all the support" from its Middle East ally in its confrontation with the United States.

Shell evacuates foreign staff from Iraq's Basra Gas project: executives

BASRA, Iraq (Reuters) - Shell has evacuated its foreign staff, numbering around 60, from Iraq’s Basra Gas Company and flew them out of Iraq on Wednesday, two Basra Gas Company executives told Reuters.

The staff were evacuated for security reasons after workers who had been laid off from work staged a protest in the Basra Gas Company headquarters and close to another company compound, two officials said.

Basrah Gas Company is a joint venture between state-owned South Gas Company, Shell and Mitsubishi.

Lebanon at risk of major food crisis, PM warns

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Lebanon is at risk of a major food crisis and many Lebanese may soon find it hard to afford bread because of an acute financial crunch and the fall-out of COVID-19, the prime minister warned.

Writing in the Washington Post, Hassan Diab also warned of a global food security emergency triggered by the pandemic. He said attempts to restrict food exports must be resisted and called on the United States and the European Union to set up an emergency fund to help the Middle East avoid a severe crisis.

Saudi Arabia's COVID-19 cases surpass 60,000

RIYADH, May 20 (Xinhua) -- Saudi Arabia's COVID-19 cases on Wednesday exceeded 60,000 with nearly 2,700 new infections, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

Saudi Health Ministry spokesperson Mohammed Al-Abdulaali told the daily press briefing that the kingdom reported 2,691 new cases, raising the overall infections to 62,545.

The death toll of the virus rose to 339, with 10 new fatalities while the tally of recoveries in the country rose by 1,844 to 33,478.

Turkish-Russian troops hold 12th joint patrol in Idlib, Syria

ANKARA, May 20 (Xinhua) -- Turkish and Russian troops conducted their 12th joint patrol along a key highway in Idlib, northwestern Syria, the Turkish defense ministry said on Wednesday.

"Within the framework of TUR-RF Agreement/Protocol, the 12th TUR-RF Combined Land Patrol on M-4 Highway in Idlib was conducted with the participation of land and air elements," the ministry tweeted.
