Less than 20 Saudi princes infected by coronavirus

1 May 2020; MEMO: Less than 20 princes have contracted the novel coronavirus, the former Saudi intelligence chief, Turki Al-Faisal, announced yesterday.

Al-Faisal comments came in an article entitled “Coronavirus thoughts” in response to a recent report by the New York Times about infected Saudi royals.

Iran plans to make islands disputed with UAE ‘habitable’

1 May 2020; MEMO: Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has tasked the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corp (IRGC) to make Gulf islands disputed with neighbouring UAE “habitable”, Iranian Fars news agency reported.

Speaking on the national Persian Gulf Day, Commander of the Navy Commodore Alireza Tangsiri, said: “We intend to build infrastructure in these islands to make them habitable to resettle residents there in implementation of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces’ orders.”

Egypt to end electricity, water subsidies

1 May 2020; MEMO: The Egyptian government is considering a bill aimed at raising the rates of electricity and water in the new fiscal year which starts in July, Al-Araby Al-Jadeed reported citing government and parliamentary sources.

The bill was drafted by the Ministry of Electricity and the Ministry of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities, and it is pending approval by the Cabinet Council, the news website added.

Lebanese PM announces new financial strategy to save country from current crisis

BEIRUT, May 1 (NNN-Xinhua) — Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab announced a comprehensive financial plan to save the country from its financial and economic crisis.

“This strategy is a clear roadmap aimed at managing the government’s public finances. We are on the right track to save Lebanon from its crisis,” Diab said during a televised speech following a meeting for the government to put the end touches on the plan.

Diab explained that the strategy is based on six pillars including the financial, economic, banking, monetary, social security and development factors.

Jordan halts Israeli farmers’ access to border enclave

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) — Jordan’s Foreign Ministry said Thursday that Israeli farmers will no longer be allowed to work their fields in an enclave of southern Jordan, ending a more than 25-year arrangement meant to shore up a historic peace agreement.

The announcement reflects the poor relations between the countries, which have been underscored by Jordan’s vocal opposition to Israeli plans to annex parts of the occupied West Bank.

Turkey policeman arrested for killing Syria teen

30 April 2020; MEMO: A police officer has been arrested and suspended from duty after he shot dead a Syrian teen at a police checkpoint in Adana on Monday.

According to a statement by Adana Governor’s office, Ali Al-Hamdan did not abide by police warning calls and refused to stop for a routine inspection as part of coronavirus curfew measures. He was then “mistakenly” shot dead by police.

Iran: Covid 19 - At least 13,000 dead in Tehran in 2 months

30 April 2020; MEMO: A member of the city council in the Iranian capital Tehran has claimed that at least 13,000 people have died there between February and March.

“In the past two months, 13,000 people have been buried in Tehran,” Mohammad Javad Haghshenas told the daily reformist newspaper Aftab-e Yazd yesterday.

However, Haghshenas stopped short of disclosing how many of these deaths were related to COVID-19 in the worst-affected country in the region.
