Yemen: Government and Saudi-backed forces begin takeover of Socotra

3 May 2020; MEMO: A joint force of the Yemeni government and Saudi Arabian-led Arab coalition began Saturday to take control of Socotra Island’s provincial center of Hadibu.

Socotra governor’s Information Secretary Muhammad Abdullah al-Socotri told Anadolu Agency that in line with an agreement to end military tension in Socotra reached Friday, the force has started its duty for the city’s security.

Russia forced Haftar to declare truce in Libya: Saleh

3 May 2020; MEMO: Eastern Libya-based renegade General Khalifa Haftar announced a truce upon the “command of Russia” as he suffered great loses against the UN-recognised Libyan government, according to pro-Haftar parliament speaker.

Discussions between the Libyan House of Representatives Speaker Aguila Saleh and tribal leaders in eastern Libya were aired on social media, where Saleh said Russia, a key foreign supporter of Haftar, prepared a report on the situation on the ground.

Palestine Welcomes Int’l Condemnation Of Israel’s Annexation Plans

RAMALLAH, May 3 (NNN-WAFA) – A senior Palestinian official welcomed international “courageous and outspoken voices” slamming Israeli annexation plans.

“In recent days, we have witnessed courageous and outspoken voices from all over the world, condemning and warning against Israeli annexation,” said Hanan Ashrawi, a member of Palestine Liberation Organisation Executive Committee, in a press statement.

“These are positive indicators of change,” her statement added, urging for sanctioning Israel.

Saudi Arabia To Cut Expenditures To Ease Economic Impact Of COVID-19

RIYADH, May 3 (NNN-SPA) – Saudi Finance Minister, Mohammed al-Jadaan, said that, his country “must reduce expenditures” to mitigate the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Saudi Arabia is committed to protecting itself from the economic fallout of COVID-19 through any necessary financial measures, despite plunging oil revenues,” he said, in an interview with Al Arabiya TV.

The minister said that, the kingdom would limit the amount of money it would take from its reserves to a maximum of 32 billion dollars.

Turkey Reports 1,983 New COVID-19 Cases, 124,375 In Total

ANKARA, May 3 (NNN-ANADOLU) – Health Minister, Fahrettin Koca, reported 1,983 new COVID-19 cases and 78 more deaths in Turkey.

The total number of confirmed cases in the country climbed to 124,375, while the death toll surged to 3,336, Koca tweeted.

Turkey conducted 36,318 tests for the virus in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of tests carried out to 1,111,366, he stated.

In addition, 58,259 patients have recovered, while 1,445 are being treated at intensive care units and 778 are intubated, the minister said.

Iran Threatens To React “Severely” If Arms Embargo Extended

TEHRAN, May 3 (NNN-TASNIM) – The Iranian government, on Saturday, threatened that, in case the arms embargo against Iran is extended, it will trigger a “harsh” response from the country.

Ali Rabiee, spokesman for Iranian administration, decried U.S. push for extending the UN Security Council’s arms embargo against Iran, saying, the White House must realise that “international treaties are not toys.”

Egypt director of video critical of Sisi dies in jail

3 May 2020; AFP: A young Egyptian film-maker imprisoned for directing a music video critical of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has died in a Cairo jail, his lawyer said Saturday.

Shady Habash, 24, died in Tora prison, said lawyer Ahmed al-Khawaga, who was unable to give a cause of death.

"His health had been deteriorating for several days.... He was hospitalised, then returned to the prison yesterday evening where he died in the night," he told AFP, without giving further details.

Sudan moves to criminalize female genital mutilation

CAIRO (AP) — Sudanese officials said Saturday they are working to criminalize the widespread practice of female genital mutilation after the transitional government approved a landmark draft law.

Under the proposed amendment to the criminal code, anyone found guilty of performing the procedure would be sentenced to up to three years in prison, according to a copy obtained by The Associated Press.

The law must still be ratified by a joint meeting of the Cabinet and the sovereign council, which assumed power after last year’s overthrow of longtime President Omar al-Bashir.

Turkey eases export rules for medical devices used for virus

ISTANBUL (AP) — The Turkish Trade Ministry lifted temporary export restrictions and a requirement for private companies to obtain advance permission before shipping abroad medical equipment used in treating COVID-19.

A notice published Saturday in Turkey’s Official Gazette rescinded restrictions on exporting ventilators, intubation tubes, life support machines, intensive care unit monitors and other critical care devices.

A government official said the decision reflected Turkey’s decreasing need for the equipment and desire to help other countries facing shortages.
