Libya: Gov't forces recaptures town near Tripoli

13 April 2020; MEMO: Libya’s government forces have seized control of Sorman, a town in the south of capital Tripoli, from militias loyal to warlord Khalifa Haftar, a spokesman said on Monday.

Mustafa Al-Mujie, spokesman of Government of National Accord (GNA)’s military forces, said they had entered the town center, and it was in their total control.

Jordan extends closure of government offices until end of April

13 April 2020; MEMO: Jordan on Sunday extended a month-long lockdown that has closed schools, universities and government agencies until the end of the month to stem the spread of coronavirus, the government spokesman said.

Amjad Adailah said Prime Minister Omar Razzaz took the decision in light of “developments and recommendations” related to the pandemic. Medical and essential public services were exempt.

Erdogan rejects Turkish minister's resignation after coronavirus lockdown criticism

13 April 2020; MEMO: President Tayyip Erdogan rejected the resignation on Sunday of Turkey’s interior minister, who said he was stepping down in the wake of a short-notice coronavirus lockdown which sent people rushing to shops to stock up on supplies.

Authorities declared the 48-hour curfew in dozens of cities shortly before 10 pm on Friday, giving millions of people just two hours’ notice and prompting a wave of desperate last-minute buying.

Israel closes off Jerusalem's ultra-Orthodox areas to stem coronavirus spread

13 April 2020; MEMO: Israel locked down mainly ultra-Orthodox Jewish areas of Jerusalem on Sunday to try to contain the spread of the coronavirus from the densely populated neighbourhoods where the infection rate is high.

The entry and exit restrictions, enforced by police roadblocks, were imposed on the same day that a government order for the wearing of masks in public went into effect throughout the country.

19 Indians stuck in Dubai airport for 3 weeks desperate to return home

Dubai, Apr 13 (PTI) Nineteen Indians are stuck at the Dubai International Airport for the last 21 days after India announced its COVID-19 lockdown, leaving them tired, homesick and desperate to return home, according to a media report.

Most of these stranded persons were in transit when India stopped inbound flights in view of the coronavirus pandemic, the Gulf News reported.

Emirates to operate limited passenger services to U.S., Asia, North Africa

DUBAI (Reuters) - Dubai’s Emirates said on Monday it planned to operate limited passenger services to Algiers, Tunis, Jakarta, Manila, Taipei, Kabul and Chicago.

It did not say when the flights would operate.

The United Arab Emirates is permitting a limited number of outbound-only flights for those wishing to leave the country after suspending regular services last month.

Israel: Former Chief Rabbi Of Israel Dies From Covid-19

JERUSALEM, Apr 13 (NNN-MA’AN) – A former Israeli chief rabbi has died, after contracting the COVID-19, Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu said today, Monday.

Eliyahu Bakshi-Doron was the country’s highest-profile death from the pandemic.

Bakshi-Doron, 79, who served from 1993 to 2003, as the state’s top chaplain for Sephardim, or Jews of Mena descent, died late on Sunday, to complications from the respiratory virus, in a Jerusalem hospital.

“Tragically, Rabbi Bakshi-Doron contracted the virus and doctors’ efforts to save him did not succeed,” Netanyahu said.

Palestine Calls For Int’l Pressure To Halt Israeli Annexation Of West Bank

RAMALLAH, Apr 13 (NNN-WAFA) – Palestine said, it is in contact with world powers to prevent Israel from advancing its plan to annex parts of the West Bank, according to a senior Palestinian official.

“The ongoing contact is aimed at pressuring Israel not to take such a step,” said Fatah party’s Vice President, Mahmoud al-Aloul.

Al-Aloul told reporters that, Israel’s attempt to annex parts of the occupied territory, “in coordination with the U.S. administration, is the peak of racism and opportunism,” in light of the world’s occupation with the COVID-19 pandemic.

OPEC, Non-OPEC Reach Oil Cuts Deal Amid COVID-19

ABU DHABI, Apr 13 (NNN-WAM) – An emergency video conference between OPEC and non-OPEC ministerial partners, chaired by Saudi Arabia, ended on Sunday with a continued commitment of the participating producing countries on the agreement reached last week, to cut oil production output, as the COVID-19 pandemic continues.
