Israel MPs tasked with ending deadlock over unity govt

JERUSALEM, April 17 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Israel’s parliament was tasked with forming a government after speaker Benny Gantz and Prime Minister Benjamin missed a deadline to seal an alliance, but both sides said negotiations would continue.

Israel’s deeply divided 120-member parliament has no clear path towards a stable governing coalition, so the move risks prolonging the country’s worst-ever political crisis.

Iran accuses U.S. of causing insecurity in Gulf

TEHRAN, April 17 (Xinhua) -- Iran's defense minister said here on Friday that the United States is the cause of insecurity in the Gulf, official IRNA news agency reported.

The "illegal and aggressive" presence of the U.S. forces in the Gulf has been the source of problems for the regional people, Brigadier General Amir Hatami said on the occasion of Iran's Army Day on Friday.

"We are at our home, and they (Americans) have come from the other end of the world and cause problems by threats and sanctions," Hatami was quoted as saying.

Israel restricts UNRWA coronavirus efforts in Jerusalem refugee camps

Migrant Nepali workers expelled from Qatar

16 April 2020; MEMO: Scores of unsuspecting migrant workers were expelled by Qatar after being informed that they would undergo examination for the new coronavirus, Amnesty International has found. Doha has denied the allegation.

Qatari police apprehended hundreds of Nepalese men last month and expelled them from the country, according to 20 men interviewed by the rights group. The migrant workers were told that they were going to be tested for COVID-19 and returned to their accommodation afterwards.

Iran's coronavirus death toll rises by 92 to 4,869: health official

(Reuters) - Iran’s new coronavirus death toll has risen by 92 to reach 4,869, Health Ministry spokesman Kianush Jahanpur said in a statement on state TV on Thursday.

Iran’s total number of cases of people infected with the new coronavirus has reached 77,995, Jahanpur said.

UAE: Etihad has full support of state owner, will resume flights in May: CEO

DUBAI (Reuters) - Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Airways has the full support of its state shareholder as it plans a partial resumption of passenger flights from May 1, its chief executive Tony Douglas said on Thursday.

Several states have stepped in to assist airlines after the coronavirus outbreak virtually halted all international air travel, though the oil rich Abu Dhabi government has so far not said whether it would help the airline it owns.

Turkey, Russia conduct 4th joint patrol in Idlib of Syria

ANKARA, April 15 (Xinhua) -- Turkish and Russian troops on Wednesday conducted their fourth joint patrol in Syria's northwestern province of Idlib, Turkish Defense Ministry said in a written statement.

"The fourth joint Turkish-Russian land patrol was conducted today by air and ground vehicles on M4 motorway in Syria's Idlib province, as part of the earlier Turkey-Russia agreement," said the ministry.

Turkey and Russia sealed a deal on March 5 for a temporary cease-fire aiming to calm down escalated tensions between the Syrian government and Turkish troops there.

Israel's Netanyahu, Gantz fail to meet midnight deadline for unity gov't

JERUSALEM, April 15 (Xinhua) -- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his main rival Benny Gantz failed to meet a midnight deadline on Wednesday night to form an emergency unity government.

Negotiation teams with Netanyahu's rightwing Likud party and Gantz's centrist Blue and White party convened for coalition talks on Wednesday evening, but no agreement was signed before the deadline.

Both parties did not immediately issue statements.
