Egypt: court sentences five to death for oil pipeline explosion

27 Mar 2020; MEMO: A court in Egypt has sentenced five people to death for damaging an oil pipeline last November and causing an explosion and fire in which nine people were killed and eleven were wounded.

The Damanhour Criminal Court in Beheira Governorate passed the sentences yesterday. Five others were sentenced to life imprisonment.

Israel: Gantz elected as Knesset Speaker after Supreme Court orders vote

27 Mar 2020; MEMO: Blue and White bloc leader Benny Gantz has been elected as Speaker of Israel’s parliament after the Supreme Court ordered the Knesset to convene and elect someone to succeed Yuli Edelstein, who resigned on Wednesday. Amir Peretz MK, the most senior Knesset member, was asked to lead the voting session.

Palestinians manufacturing masks for Israel

27 Mar 2020; MEMO: Following the global outbreak of the highly contagious coronavirus, a Palestinian sewing company is producing surgical masks and other protective gear instead of clothing, reports The Times of Israel.

UniPal 2000 factory in the Karni Industrial Zone in Gaza City is a merger of four sewing factories with a capital of $1.2 million and 200 workers.

Gantz supporters angry as he moves towards deal with Netanyahu on Israeli leadership

TEL AVIV (Reuters) - Israel appeared headed for a unity government on Friday after opposition leader Benny Gantz moved towards an agreement with Prime Minister Benjmain Netanyahu, disappointing voters who had hoped to bring down the right-wing premier.

Gantz was elected parliamentary speaker on Thursday with support from Netanyahu’s Likud and allied parties, leaving many of his own partners furious over the possibility he could form an alliance with a leader under criminal indictment.

He cited the coronavirus epidemic as the reason for his decision.

Armed Israeli troops to help enforce coronavirus lockdown

TEL AVIV (Reuters) - Israel will deploy armed troops to support police on street patrols in enforcing a lockdown against the coronavirus epidemic, the military said on Friday.

About 500 troops will join police squads from Sunday to help “in patrolling, isolating and securing certain areas, blocking routes and additional similar assignments”, the military said in a statement.

Qatar Airways adds more seats/flights to help people go home

KUALA LUMPUR, March 26 (NNN) — Qatar Airways says it has added 10,000 extra seats since Tuesday as part of its efforts to help people get to their home countries amid the COVID-19 scare.

In a statement here today, the airlines said it has been also providing charter services to Europe and the US from Asia, as well as additional flights to Paris, Perth and Dublin from Doha.

Iraq extends nationwide curfew until April 11

BAGHDAD, March 27 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The Iraqi government said that it will extend a countrywide lockdown it imposed in response to the coronavirus pandemic until April 11.

Schools, universities, shopping centres and other large gathering places will remain closed, as will the country’s international airports.

Authorities have confirmed that at least 29 Iraqis have died from COVID-19 and nearly 350 others have contracted the disease.

But there are fears the real number is much higher, as only around 2,000 of Iraq’s 40 million people have been tested.

Turkey’s corona death toll climbs to 75

ANKARA, March 27 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Turkey confirmed 16 more deaths from the novel coronavirus late on Thursday, bringing the total number of fatalities to 75.

A total of 7,286 coronavirus tests have been conducted on Thursday on people suspected of contracting the virus, and 1,196 tested positive, bringing the tally of infections to 3,629, Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said on Twitter.

The minister said that the patients and their contact circles have been isolated.
