Iraq repatriates 112 Azerbaijani children of IS-affiliated families

BAGHDAD, March 12 (Xinhua) -- Iraq has repatriated 112 children born to Azerbaijani families affiliated with the Islamic State (IS) militant group, the Iraqi Foreign Ministry said Thursday.

Ahmed al-Sahaf, spokesman of the ministry, said in a statement that the repatriated children had been held with their convicted mothers imprisoned in Iraq for joining the extremist IS.

Suspension of Libyan oil exports costs 3 bln USD losses

TRIPOLI, March 13 (Xinhua) -- Libya's National Oil Corporation (NOC) on Thursday said that the suspension of oil exports because of the closure of oil fields and ports has caused losses of more than three billion U.S. dollars so far.

"Oil and gas production in Libya has been consistently down. The current levels of production are 97,508 barrels a day, as of Wednesday March 11, 2020. Forced restriction of production has resulted in financial losses exceeding 3,086,823,264 USD since January 17, 2020," NOC said in a statement.

Iraq will investigate attack on base that killed US troops

BAGHDAD (AP) — Iraq’s military said Thursday it opened an investigation into a rocket attack that killed three service members, including two Americans, at an Iraqi base housing coalition forces, igniting fears of an escalation in U.S.-Iran tensions after months of detente.

At least 12 coalition personnel were also wounded late Wednesday by a barrage of rockets targeting Camp Taji base, located 27 kilometers (17 miles) north of Baghdad, according to a U.S.-led coalition statement.

Morocco withdraws ambassador from Abu Dhabi

12 Mar 2020; MEMO: Moroccan media reported, on Wednesday, that Rabat has withdrawn its ambassador and consulates in the UAE, due to the Emirati authorities’ reluctance for a whole year to appoint an ambassador in Rabat to fill the vacancy.

Meanwhile, the Anadolu Agency was not able to obtain immediate comments from the Moroccan authorities on this matter, and Rabat did not issue any official announcement in this regard until 13:20 GMT.

Haftar visits Damascus secretly to coordinate against Turkey

12 Mar 2020; MEMO: Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper revealed that retired Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar has recently visited Damascus secretly, followed by Head of Egyptian intelligence, Abbas Kamel, who also attended the Syrian capital last mid-week, in light of coordinating efforts against Turkey.

FBI in Sudan to help probe assassination attempt

KHARTOUM, March 12 (NNN-AGENCIES) — A team from the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has arrived in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, to help with enquiries into a failed assassination attempt against the prime minister.

Abdalla Hamdok’s convoy was attacked with explosives and gunfire on Monday.

It is not yet clear who was behind the attack and the arrival of the three US investigators follows a call from the Sudanese authorities for foreign assistance.

Iran agrees to hand over downed jet’s black boxes to Ukraine

MONTREAL, March 12 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Iran pledged at a meeting of UN civil aviation agency to hand over black boxes from downed Flight 752 to Ukraine or France for analysis – a move welcomed by Canada and Ukraine.

Iran’s representative at the International Civil Aviation Organization in Montreal, Farhad Parvaresh, said the devices would be sent to Kiev.

Qatar Confirms 238 New COVID-19 Cases

DOHA, Mar 12 (NNN-QNA) – Qatar, on Wednesday, announced that, 238 new cases of COVID-19 were registered in the country.

All the new cases detected had interacted with people previously identified as infected.

Qatar, on Monday, announced a nationwide closure of all schools and universities, “until further notice,” amid concerns about the COVID-19.

Qatar’s health ministry had earlier said, it temporarily banned the entry of travellers from 14 countries.
