Iran delivers second round of attacks on US military facilities — Tasnim news agency

TEHRAN, January 8. /TASS/: The Iranian military delivered another round of missile attacks targeting US military facilities, Tasnim news agency reported.

The agency did not specify the exact locations of the new wave of attacks reporting only that they were carried out with the use of missiles.

 

Putin visits Istanbul to attend TurkStream launch ceremony

ISTANBUL, January 8. /TASS/: Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday will participate in the commissioning ceremony of the TurkStream gas pipeline in Istanbul. Putin arrived in the city the day before from Damascus, where he met with Bashar al-Assad, visited the command post of the Russian Armed Forces group in Syria, toured the Great Mosque of Damascus and the Mariamite Cathedral of Damascus.

Iran’s IRGC Fires Missiles At U.S. Airbase In Iraq

TEHRAN, Jan 8 (NNN-IRNA) – Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), fired “tens of surface-to-surface missiles” at the U.S. airbase in Anbar, in western Iraq, in retaliation for the killing of Iranian general, Qassem Soleimani, Press TV reported today (Wednesday).

The IRGC called for a complete withdrawal of U.S. troops from the Arab country, and said that, it would not differentiate between the United States and Israel, in retaliation against the assassination of the Iranian general, according to the report.

Saudi Aramco falls on U.S.-Iran tensions; debt markets little changed

DUBAI (Reuters) - Saudi Aramco shares fell to a new low on Wednesday after Iran launched missiles against U.S. targets in Iraq, but Gulf debt markets were fairly stable, as some had feared stronger retaliation from Iran.

Saudi Aramco opened at 34 riyals ($9.06), its lowest since it began trading on Dec. 11, putting the market value of the company at around $1.8 billion, down from a peak of $2.06 trillion on Dec 12.

Turkish minister to visit Iraq to ease tensions after Iran strikes

ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkey’s foreign minister will visit Iraq on Thursday to try to ease tensions after Iran launched missiles at U.S.-led forces in response to the killing of a top Iranian commander, the foreign ministry said on Wednesday.

Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu will travel to Iraq as part of Ankara’s “intensified diplomatic efforts to alleviate the escalated tension in the aftermath of recent developments in the region”, the ministry said in a statement.

Cavusoglu also spoke to Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif by phone, it said in a separate statement.

Netanyahu says anyone attacking Israel will be dealt 'strongest blow'

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Wednesday, after an Iranian missile strike on U.S.-led forces in Iraq, that Israel would hit back hard against anyone who attacked his country.

Netanyahu reiterated his praise for U.S. President Donald Trump for the killing of Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani last week, calling it a bold move.

The Israeli leader said Soleimani had tried to destabilize the region for decades and was “planning much worse.”

Iran will not give black box from crashed Ukrainian airliner to Boeing: Mehr

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran will not give the black box of the crashed Ukrainian airliner to planemaker Boeing, the head of Tehran’s civil aviation organization was quoted as saying on Wednesday.

Ali Abedzadeh also said it was not clear which country Iran would send the box to so that its data could be analyzed, semi-official Mehr news agency reported.

A Ukraine International Airlines Boeing 737 crashed earlier on Wednesday, killing all 176 people aboard shortly after taking off from Tehran’s Imam Khomeini airport.

One Iranian missile lands in field outside Irbil

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — The latest on U.S.-Iran tensions after the U.S. airstrike that killed Iran’s top general (all times local):

At least one missile from the Iranian strike against U.S. forces in Iraq on Wednesday landed in a field near Bardarash, about 50 kilometers (31 miles) from Irbil, the capital of Iraq’s self-governing Kurdish region.

An Iraqi Kurdish channel, Rudaw TV, showed video of police inspecting the impact site and removing shrapnel.

Russian lawmaker warns of risk of nuclear war

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — A Russian lawmaker warns that a conflict between the U.S. and Iran might lead to a nuclear war.

The comments by Vladimir Dzhabarov, lawmaker with Russia’s upper house of parliament, on Wednesday followed an Iranian missile strike at military bases in Iraq used by U.S. forces. The strike was in retaliation for the U.S. killing Iran’s top military commander in Baghdad.

Ukrainian airplane crashes near Iran’s capital, killing 176

SHAHEDSHAHR, Iran (AP) — A Ukrainian airplane carrying 176 people crashed on Wednesday shortly after takeoff from Tehran’s main airport, killing all onboard, Iranian state TV and officials in Ukraine said.

The plane had taken off from Imam Khomeini International Airport in the Iranian capital when a fire struck one of its engines, said Qassem Biniaz, a spokesman for Iran’s Road and Transportation Ministry. The pilot of the aircraft then lost control of the plane, sending it crashing into the ground, Biniaz said, according to the state-run IRNA news agency.
