US Marines arrive at America embassy in Baghdad

03 Jan 2019; MEMO: US Marines yesterday landed at the American embassy in Baghdad, an Iraqi security source revealed.

The officer in the Iraqi defence ministry said US helicopters circled over the Green Zone in the capital as electricity was cut off in the local vacinity.

The source, who preferred not to be named, added: “The Marines landed at the American embassy and combed the building.”

There was no immediate comment from the Iraqi authorities on this.

At least 12 Iraqi military wounded in missile attack near Baghdad airport - TV

TASS, January 3: A series of powerful explosions struck near Baghdad International Airport in the early hours of Friday, Al-Hadath TV channel has reported.

The supposed missile attacks apparently targeted US military bases located in the area, the report said. At least 12 Iraqi military were wounded in the explosion. Several civilians were also injured. One of the missiles struck a runway and the airport was closed.

Zarif slams top Iranian commander’s murder as act of international terrorism

TASS, January 3: Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has condemned the murder of Qasem Soleimani, the head of the Quds Force, an elite unite of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, as the US act of international terrorism.

"The US' act of international terrorism, targeting & assassinating General Soleimani … is extremely dangerous & a foolish escalation," Zarif wrote on his Twitter account, describing the commander as "the most effective force fighting" the Islamic State, Al Nusra and Al Qaeda terror groups (outlawed in Russia).

Sudanese army confirms 18 killed in An-12 plane crash in Darfur

CAIRO, January 3. /TASS/: At least 18 people were killed when an Antonov An-12 military aircraft crashed in Sudan’s West Darfur on Thursday, Sudanese Army Spokesman Brigadier General Amer Mohamed al-Hassan said, according to local media.

There were 18 people onboard the plane: seven crew members - all of them military, including four officers, eight civilians, with four children among them, and three judges. No one survived the crash.

Rouhani says Iran more determined to resist U.S. after Soleimani's death

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran will be more determined to resist the United States, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Friday, in response to the killing of Quds Force chief Qassem Soleimani in Iraq, Iranian state television reported.

“Soleimani’s martyrdom will make Iran more decisive to resist America’s expansionism and to defend our Islamic values. With no doubt, Iran and other freedom-seeking countries in the region will take his revenge,” said Rouhani in a statement.

Iraqi PM says U.S. killing of Iranian commander will 'light the fuse' of war

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq’s prime minister condemned on Friday the U.S. killing of Iranian Quds Force commander Qassem Soleimani and Iraqi militia commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis and said it would “light the fuse” of war.

The United States killed Soleimani, head of the elite Quds Force and architect of Iran’s spreading military influence in the Middle East, in a strike at Baghdad airport. Muhandis, an adviser to Soleimani, was also killed.

Israel puts military on heightened alert after U.S. killing of Iranian commander

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel put its military on heightened alert on Friday and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cut short a trip abroad after the U.S. killing of Iranian commander Qassem Soleimani drew promises of revenge from Iran.

Israel, America’s closest ally in the Middle East and Iran’s top regional foe, has not publicly responded to the death of Quds Force chief Soleimani and Iraqi militia commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis in the U.S. air strike in Baghdad.
