Syrian Kurdish official warns of Islamic State jail break

BEIRUT (Reuters) - A senior Kurdish official warned on Thursday that Islamic State militants could break out of prisons in northeast Syria as fighting intensifies between the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and Turkey.

Badran Jia Kurd told Reuters the number of security forces guarding the IS detainees would have to be reduced as the Turkish forces step up an offensive that got underway on Wednesday.

“This attack will definitely reduce and weaken the guarding system for those Daesh militants in the prisons,” he said, using the Arabic acronym for Islamic State.

Turkey says 109 militants killed in advance into northeast Syria

ISTANBUL/ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkish forces have killed more than 100 militants in an assault on Kurdish militia in northeast Syria, Turkey’s president said on Thursday, as heavy shelling and air strikes against targets in the region continued.

According to a senior Turkish security official, armed forces struck weapons and ammunition depots, gun and sniper positions, tunnels and military bases.

Jets conducted operations up to 30 km (18 miles) into Syria, and a Reuters witness saw shells exploding just outside the town of Tel Abyad.

Royal Air Maroc suspends deal for two more Boeing 737 MAX jets: source

RABAT (Reuters) - Morocco’s national carrier Royal Air Maroc (RAM) has suspended a deal to purchase two more Boeing (BA.N) 737 MAX jets after the same model of aircraft crashed in Ethiopia, a source from the airline told Reuters on Thursday.

RAM had planned to receive the two 737 MAX aircraft in June, the source said, adding that two other 737 Max planes in its fleet had been grounded pending the findings of an investigation into the Ethiopian crash in March.

Boeing did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.

Tunisia’s Islamist Party “Ennahdha” Ranks First In Parliamentary Elections

TUNIS, Oct 10 (NNN-TAP) – Tunisia’s Islamist party “Ennahdha” (Renaissance), ranked first in Tunisian parliamentary elections by winning 52 seats, the Independent High Authority for Elections (ISIE) said, on Wednesday evening.

The Heart of Tunisia party came second, with 38 seats out of 217 seats in the Assembly of People’s Representatives (parliament), despite its leader, Nabil Karoui, was in prison for suspicion of money laundering and tax evasion.

Turkey Starts Ground Operation In Northern Syria

ANKARA, Oct 10 (NNN-ANADOLU) – Turkish Armed Forces, late Wednesday, began a land operation into northern Syria against the Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG).

“The Turkish Armed Forces and the Syrian National Army have launched the land operation into the east of the Euphrates river, as part of the Operation Peace Spring,” the Turkish Defence Ministry said.

Kuwait Says Turkish Military Operation In Syria Threatens Regional Stability

KUWAIT, Oct 10 (NNN-KUNA) – The military operation, launched by the Turkish army in Syria, poses a direct threat to the security and stability in the region, Kuwaiti Foreign Ministry said, on Wednesday.

“The military escalation risks undermining the chances of political solution, sought by international community, after the tangible progress made in the quest for peace in Syria,” an official source at the ministry said.

Turkish shelling kills 8 civilians in Syria's Hasakah

DAMASCUS, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- At least eight civilians were killed and 20 others wounded on Wednesday by Turkish shelling on Syria's northeastern province of Hasakah, Syrian state news agency SANA reported.

SANA said that three children and a woman were among the killed by Turkish artillery shelling on the city of Qamishli, and the towns of Ras al-Ayn, and al-Darbasiyah in the countryside of Hasakah, which is largely controlled by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and its broader umbrella of the People's Protection Units (YPG).

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison says he’s worried Turkey’s campaign in Syria will lead to the resurgence of the Islamic State group.

He told reporters in Sydney on Wednesday that he was “deeply concerned” about Turkey’s actions and has expressed to the Turkish and U.S. governments his concerns about the safety of civilians and the Kurdish people.

Turkey begins offensive against Kurdish fighters in Syria

AKCAKALE, Turkey (AP) — Turkey launched airstrikes, fired artillery and began a ground offensive against Kurdish fighters in northern Syria on Wednesday after U.S. troops pulled back from the area, paving the way for an assault on forces that have long been allied with the United States.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced the start of the campaign, which followed the abrupt decision Sunday by U.S. President Donald Trump to essentially abandon the Syrian Kurdish fighters, leaving them vulnerable to a Turkish offensive that was widely condemned around the world.
