Sudan has received half of $3 billion aid promised by Saudi and UAE

ABU DHABI (Reuters) - Sudan has received half of $3 billion in aid promised by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in April and expects the remainder to be paid by the end of next year, Sudan’s finance minister said late on Monday.

The Gulf countries agreed the aid package soon after former president Omar al-Bashir was ousted, throwing a lifeline to Sudan’s new military leaders at the time.

Iraq military admits ‘excessive force’ used in deadly protests

BAGHDAD, Oct 8 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Iraq’s military admitted for the first time it had used “excessive force” in nearly a week of deadly protests, as paramilitary units said they were ready to back the government.

More than 100 people have been killed and several thousand wounded in demonstrations increasingly spiralling into violence, with witnesses reporting security forces using water cannons, tear gas and live rounds.

On Sunday evening a mass protest in Sadr City in east Baghdad led to clashes that medics and security forces said left 13 people dead.

Turkish military campaign against Kurdish forces begins in northern Syria

DAMASCUS, Oct 8 (NNN-Xinhua) — The Turkish military campaign against the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) began on Monday night in northern and northeastern Syria, Syria’s state TV and activists reported.

The state TV in Syria said the Turkish attack targeted the SDF-held Tal Tawil area in the northeastern countryside of Hasakah province in northeastern Syria, branding the attack as a “Turkish aggression.”

Iran says Arak heavy water reactor's secondary part operational soon

TEHRAN, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi said Monday that the secondary part of Iran's Arak heavy water reactor will become operational in the coming weeks.

"We will make the secondary part of the Arak heavy water reactor facility operational as early as the next three weeks," Salehi was quoted as saying by Press TV.

"The reactor consists of primary and secondary sections whereby an overwhelming part of (nuclear) processes is done in the latter," Salehi said without elaboration.

Erdogan discusses Syria ‘safe zone’ with Trump, White House says US won’t be involved

7 Oct 2019; MEMO: Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan and US President Donald Trump discussed Turkey’s plans to establish a “safe zone” east of the Euphrates River in Syria in a phone call on Sunday, but the White House said US forces would not be involved, Reuters reports.

The Turkish presidency said after the call that Erdogan and Trump had agreed to meet in Washington next month, following an invitation by the US president.

Erdogan allows 3 Turkey university campuses to open in Syria

7 Oct 2019; MEMO: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has approved a request from a Turkish university to open three campuses in northern Syria.

The campuses will be affiliated with Gaziantep University, which is the south-eastern city bordering Syria. The faculties will be located in Turkish controlled cities.

PA calls for UN to hold Israel accountable for its crimes

7 Oct 2019; MEMO: The Palestinian Authority (PA) yesterday said that it would continue calling for the UN to hold the Israeli occupation accountable for its crimes against Palestinians.

A statement by the PA’s Foreign Ministry said: “The international community is demanded to hold the Israeli occupation accountable and bring it to justice for its crimes instead of turning a blind eye to the daily Israeli violations.”
