Iran condemns U.S. Gulf security plan as "source of insecurity"

TEHRAN, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Iranian officials have condemned a U.S. plan to set up a coalition to secure maritime transport in the Gulf.

On Friday, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif denounced the U.S. plan to establish a military coalition in the Gulf to counter what it calls the "Iran threat," Press TV reported.

The presence of non-regional military forces in the strategic region will act as a "source of insecurity," Zarif was quoted as saying.

Turkey, U.S. deal on Syrian safe zone "good start": Turkish FM

ANKARA, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- An agreement between Turkey and the United States on establishing a safe zone in northeastern Syria is a "very good start," Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Thursday.

"The establishment of a framework has been agreed on. It is important to set up a joint operation center for steps that will be taken from now on," the minister told reporters.

Egyptian police identify terrorist in deadly car bomb attack in Cairo

CAIRO, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- The Egyptian police identified on Thursday the terrorist who killed 20 people using a booby-trapped car in the Egyptian capital Cairo earlier this week.

The man was named as Abdul Rahman Khaled Mahmoud who belongs to Hasm, an armed group affiliated to the banned Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt's interior ministry said in a statement.

The terrorist's identity has been confirmed after matching his DNA with his family members, the ministry revealed.

Turkey, US agree to form joint operation centre for Syria safe zone

8 Aug 2019; MEMO: Turkey and the United States agreed on Wednesday to establish a joint operation centre in Turkey to coordinate and manage a planned safe zone in northeast Syria, a move that appeared to reduce the chance of imminent Turkish military action, Reuters reports.

PA condemns Israel’s approval of 2,300 new settlement in occupied areas

8 Aug 2019; MEMO: The Palestinian Authority (PA) yesterday condemned Israel’s approval of 2,300 settlement units in the occupied West Bank.

In a radio interview, the PA’s Foreign Minister Riyadh Al-Maliki said: “Israel got the support of the current American administration to escalate its settlement projects in the Palestinian territories.”

Badie still sleeps on the floor in solitary confinement in Egypt prison

8 Aug 2019; MEMO: Doha Badie, daughter of the Supreme Guide of Muslim Brotherhood Mohamed Badie, said yesterday that her 76-year-old father sleeps on the ground in his cell in an Egyptian prison, the Anadolu Agency reported.

On Facebook, Doha noted that her father turned 76 and has spent 19 years in jail, both since the coup and during the reign of President Anwar Sadat.
