In power for the past decade, Netanyahu has unexpectedly struggled to seal an agreement with a clutch of right-wing, far-right and ultra-Orthodox Jewish parties that would align with his Likud party and ensure him a fifth term following Israel’s April 9 election.

Settler filmed starting fire in West Bank field is Israeli soldier

27 May 2019; MEMO: One of the two Jewish settlers recently caught on video starting a fire in the occupied West Bank is an Israeli soldier, it has been revealed.

According to reports in the Israeli media, “the army knows the identity of the settler”, and “two security sources confirmed the details, saying that the soldier was on leave when the arson took place”.

8 killed in road accident in central Kuwait

KUWAIT CITY, May 27 (Xinhua) -- At least eight people were killed and one injured in an early Monday road accident in central Kuwait, the Kuwait Fire Service Directorate (KFSD) said in a statement Monday.

The tragedy happened after three cars collided in Kabd area about 35 km from Kuwait City, capital of Kuwait, when a crowd of people gathered to help, KFSD said.

Afterwards, a speeding four wheel-drive vehicle plowed into the crowd of people, resulting in a number of deaths and injuries, it added.

Israeli forces arrest 8 Palestinians in occupied West Bank

27 May 2019; MEMO: Israeli forces rounded up eight Palestinians in overnight raids across the occupied West Bank, according to the Israeli military on Monday, Anadolu reports.

The individuals were arrested for “suspected involvement in popular terrorist activities”, the army said in a statement, without elaborating on the nature of these activities.

“The suspects have been taken into custody for further investigation,” it added.

Palestine welcomes Czech move on Jerusalem

27 May 2019; MEMO: The Palestinian Foreign Ministry on Monday welcomed the Czech Republic’s rejection to relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, Anadolu reports.

In a statement, the ministry lauded the Czech “commitment to international resolutions and international law”.

On Saturday, Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis reiterated rejection to relocate his country’s embassy in Israel, citing that the move would contradict with the stances of the EU and UN.

Spotlight: Iran-U.S. disputes not to drift towards war: experts

TEHRAN, May 26 (Xinhua) -- The recent military build-up by the U.S. regional forces has increased danger of conflicts between Tehran and Washington and has worried regional and international players.

The United States has deployed warships and bombers to the Iranian southern waters, and has reduced the number of its diplomats and employees in Iraq, citing intelligence about potential threats to U.S. nationals by Iran or its allies.

Qatar invited by Saudi Arabia to talks over Iran tensions

Doha, May 27 (AFP/PTI) Qatar said on Sunday that it had received an invitation from Saudi Arabia to attend emergency regional talks to discuss mounting tensions between Iran and the United States.

Riyadh had called two gatherings -- one for Arab League members, the other for Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) regional bloc nations -- after a spate of attacks.

Several tankers in Gulf waters were targeted under mysterious circumstances and a Saudi crude pipeline was hit by drone strikes coordinated by Yemen rebels who Riyadh said were acting on Iranian orders.

UN calls for release of arbitrarily detained, abducted persons in Libya

TRIPOLI, May 26 (Xinhua) -- The UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) on Sunday called for the immediate release of all persons arbitrarily detained and abducted in Libya.

"The Mission calls once again for all those arbitrarily detained and abducted to be immediately released, and reminds all parties to the conflict of their obligations under the International Humanitarian Law and the International Human Rights Law," the Mission said in a statement.

Iran denies negotiations with U.S. over disputes

TEHRAN, May 26 (Xinhua) -- Iran's Foreign Ministry on Sunday denied that Iran had started talks with the United States over the mutual differences.

"There are no direct or indirect talks between Iran and the United States," Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi said.

Mousavi made the remarks in response to the Kuwaiti media's Sunday reports that Tehran and Washington have started their negotiations over disputes.
