Egyptian pro-democracy activist free after 5 years in prison

CAIRO (AP) — A leading Egyptian pro-democracy activist was freed from prison early Friday after serving a five-year sentence for inciting and taking part in protests, his family and lawyer said. The terms of his release, however, require that he report to a police station every day for the next five years.

Turkish court dismisses case against DW contributor Pelin Unker

28 Mar 2019; DW: A court in Istanbul has rejected "defamation and slander through press" charges against freelance journalist Pelin Unker, who also works as a contributor for DW.

The presiding judge said that the case would be dismissed due to the statute of limitations specified in the Turkish Press Law.

Talking to DW correspondent Julia Hahn, Unker said the trials against reporters "are aimed at intimidating us."

Libyan army arrests more than 100 illegal immigrants

TRIPOLI, March 29 (Xinhua) -- Libya's eastern-based army on Thursday said it arrested more than 100 illegal immigrants in the northeastern city of Tobruk.

A total of 43 immigrants were arrested in southern Tubrok during a patrol, the army said, adding that another patrol discovered 60 more of them.

Tubruk is located near the Egyptian border, a smuggling hotspot. Libya is a preferred point of departure for illegal immigrants trying to cross into Europe.

Improved weather conditions have increased flows of illegal immigrants recently.

Maltese navy seizes tanker hijacked by migrants

28 Mar 2019; DW: Malta's navy said that a special operations team had taken control of a tanker that was hijacked by migrants off the coast of Libya. The ship arrived at a Maltese port on Thursday morning.

The migrants had taken control of the vessel on Wednesday, and directed it north toward Europe, according to Italian and Maltese authorities.

Syria requests emergency UN Security Council meeting over Golan Heights

MOSCOW, March 27. /TASS/. Syria has requested an emergency UN Security Council meeting after the United States recognized Israel’s sovereignty over Golan Heights, AFP said on Wednesday citing diplomatic sources.

France, which holds the Security Council presidency this month, will appoint the date of the meeting soon.

Syria's air defenses respond to Israeli airstrike in Aleppo countryside

DAMASCUS, March 27 (Xinhua) -- The Syrian air defenses responded to Israeli airstrike in Syria's northern province of Aleppo overnight Wednesday, intercepting a number of missiles before reaching their targets, according to the state news agency SANA.

The airstrike targeted the Sheikh Najjar area in the northeastern countryside of Aleppo, according to the report, citing a military statement.

Sounds of explosions were heard around the government-controlled area of Sheikh Najjar, which is an industrial zone in the northeastern countryside of Aleppo, said the report.

Algerian army chief calls for presidency to be vacated

Morocco to buy 3.78-bln-USD arms from U.S.

RABAT, March 25 (Xinhua) -- Morocco will buy 3.787 billion U.S. dollars' worth of arms from the United States, the Moroccan financial news site Medias24.com reported Monday.

According to a press release by the U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency earlier in the day, the deal includes the purchase of 25 F-16/D Block 72 aircraft and related equipment.

Morocco currently has 23 F-16 aircraft.
