2 Saudi astronauts head to the International Space Station

22 May 2023; MEMO: Axiom Space company yesterday launched its second private mission to the International Space Station carrying two Saudi astronauts including the first Saudi woman.

The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, carrying Ali Alqarni and Rayyanah Barnawi launched at 17:37 (21:37 GMT) from the Kennedy Space Centre in the US state of Florida.

Iran arrests 'terrorists' linked to Israel

22 May 2023; MEMO: Iran's Intelligence Minister Esmail Khatib said on Sunday that "terrorists" linked to Israel in the west of the country have been arrested. Khatib added that the Iranian intelligence service hopes to enhance security on the western borders in cooperation with the Iraqi government.

The minister warned that, in any event, wherever the security of Iran is exposed, any movement on the borders will be met with a decisive and overwhelming response by the armed forces and security services.

Turkiye: Ogan who came 3rd in presidential election now backs Erdogan in runoff vote

22 May 2023; MEMO: Sinan Ogan, who came third in last week's presidential election in Turkiye, has endorsed President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the runoff vote scheduled for Sunday.

Speaking to reporters today, Ogan said: "I declare that we will support the candidate of People's Alliance, Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the second round of the presidential election."

Qatar's $30bn LNG mega project on track to complete construction by 2027

22 May 2023; MEMO: Qatargas' massive North Field Expansion (NFE) is progressing construction activities and expected to be completed by 2027, DMS Projects reports.

According to the report, the $30 billion development project involves four liquefaction mega-trains at 8 (million tons per annum) mtpa each, resulting in 32 mtpa of new LNG production.

North Field East will be the largest LNG project by liquefaction capacity undertaken to date by the industry, the report added.

Syria officials should be investigated for crimes against humanity, says HRW

22 May 2023; MEMO: Syrian government officials should be investigated for crimes against humanity, Human Rights Watch has said against the backdrop of the UAE's invitation to Bashar Al-Assad to attend the UN climate conference COP28.

It would be the Syrian President's first appearance at a global conference since the Syrian uprising and subsequent war began in 2011.

France summons brother, assistant of Lebanon Central Bank boss in fraud probe

22 May 2023; MEMO: France's judiciary has summoned the brother of, and an assistant to, Lebanon's Central Bank Governor, two sources close to the matter told Reuters on Monday, as it continues its probe into alleged embezzlement and money-laundering by the bank chief, Reuters reports.

Iran asserts sovereignty on islands claimed by UAE

22 May 2023; MEMO: Iran has reiterated its sovereignty over three Persian Gulf islands disputed with the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

"Iran will do all in its power to protect its territorial sovereignty," Foreign Ministry spokesman, Nasser Kanaani, said in statements.

Both Iran and the UAE claim the islands of Abu Musa and Greater and Lesser Tunb, which have been held by Tehran since 1971.
